Stephen Daily
Mayor of Kokoma
Kokomo, Indiana
Dear Mr. Daily:
On November 3, 1979, in Greensboro, North Carolina members of the KKK
and Nazis, aided by the police department, drove into an anti-Klan march
and brutally murderedfiiire^ members of the Communist Workers Party (CWP). It
was cle^r in Greensboro, as it will^be in Kokomo, what th*". police and the city
officials guarantees of protection were worth and who they actually protected.
On November 3rd they disarmed the anti-Klan demonstrators. They did not
disarm the Klan and Nazis. In fact they knew ;the Klan was armed and escorted
them into the demonstration. The police stayed awaydruirv he cold-blooded
and calculated murders. When the police qame back they lee che Klap get away
and arrested the anti-Klan demonstrators. And they lef^t our husbands - Bill,
Jim, Cesar and Mike and our friend Sandy dead in the streets.
On April 26th, the mayor and city officials of Kokomo will be held
responsible for anything that happens. All eyes trill be on Kokomo, Indiana
pn the 26th when the mayor and city officials will be publicly supporting
the Klan's racism and violence by allowing them to march through the streets
of Kokomo. Y°Us> Mr. Mayor, have publicly stated that the police will do
everything necessary to protect the racist Klan! It is clear to all, as it
has been in places such as Decatur, Alabama, Greensboro, North Carolina, and
most recently in Oceanside, California, .that your promise of protection is
really a "promise that the police will stand aside'' while Klapsnen attack anti-
Klan demonstrators. And your "promise'1 is also a guarantee that the Klan will
get away and the anti-Flan demonstrators will be blamed to get you and other city
officials off the hook. The Klan's history is one of racism and violence against
the wprking class, minorities and oppressed of this country. The Klan is
used by and protected by the capitalists to split the .ranks of the workers - Black
against white. Chicano, etc. Kokomo will be no different- The city officials
pf Kokomo will be held responsible for anything that happens. On April 2fth
the eyes of this country will be on Kokomo.
Because of this we are demanding that :
(1) the Klan permit be revoked!
(2) legal observors be allowed to attend both the Klan and anti-
Klan demonstrations.
Sincerely,
Dale Sampson, widow of Bill Sampson
Floris Cauce, widow of Cesar Cauce
Marty Nathan, widow of Dr. Michael Nathan
Signe Mailer, widow of Dr. James Waller
