Integration
Questioned
A student debate and panel discussion on the possibilities, effects
and basis of racial integration at
Guilford College will be held on
Thursday evening, October 12, in
the College Union. Intense concern of many students has led to
their organization of this debate
to emphasize the relevance of the
pressing problems of segregation
in hopes of encouraging a definite
policy on the matter to be adopted by the school. Since the gradual
or immediate solution of this problem will have considerable effect
on each of us, we need to examine
our individual views and motives,
considering all effects: locally, regionally, nationally, and universally.
(1) Are our views motivated by
personal resentments, prejudices,
and grudges, or by openminded-
ness toward promoting human
rights and value?
(2) How would our views appear in the world light?
(3) Should we use the 'equality'
argument to defend integration
when there may be chances of
detriment to a community? How
should 'equal' oportunities be established?
(4) Must integration be enforced, or allowed to have gradual
establishment?
(5) Would the college campus
be enriched or degraded by integration? How would Negro stu
dents be accepted in the college
community?
(6) What part can we as individuals play in solving the problems of our community?
