African Educator
Visits Campus
Benjamin Wegasa
By Shirley Jones
A man whose main concern is
the education of his countrywomen recently spent several days telling Guilfordians about his homeland and the problems he is up
against.
The man is Mr. Benjamin Wegasa, assistant superintendent of a
girls' school in the British Crown
Colony of Kenya.
The thirty-year-old East African
is in the \J. S. on an extended
speaking tour. Arriving at Guilford
April 26 as the house guest of History Professor Algie I. Newlin and
his wife, Mr. Wegasa left Guilford
for Richmond, Indiana on May 2.
While here Mr. Wegasa spoke to
Guilfordians several times: twice
in chapel and once in the New Garden Meetinghouse on campus.
In his addresses he emphasized
the importance of education to
the future development of his
country, noting that problems such
as a woman's value in terms of
dowry, youthful marriage, and
drastic shortage of educational facilities are yet to be overcome.
