Mary Montague Watts (1930 - ) graduated in 1953 from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, with a degree in Primary Education. The interview took place at the Feminist Theory and Music 10: Improvising and Galvanizing Conference held at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro's School of Music. Also present were UNCG Development Officer Miriam Blackwelder Fields; Audra Clinard Foil, Class of 1953; Jean Hester McMillan, Class of 1951; and various unidentified members of the audience who asked questions. Watts shares her memories of when she was a member of the Darlinettes, an all-girl swing/jazz band. She recalls her love of music, playing the accordion, being in the band during her last three years on campus, band rehearsals, the Rhythmettes who sang with the band, and the Darlinettes not being recognized as an official organization by the college administration. Watts mentions her sister Jaylee Montague Mead, Class of 1951; music professors George Dickieson and George Thompson; and dorm life. Foil and McMillian also share memories of their time with the Darlinettes and campus life.
