Audra Clinard Foil (1931 - ) graduated in 1953 from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, with a degree in Primary Education. Jean Hester McMillan (1930 - ) graduated in 1951 from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, with a degree in Business Education. The interview took place at the Feminist Theory and Music 10: Improvising and Galvanizing Conference held at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro's School of Music. Also present were UNCG Development Officer Miriam Blackwelder Fields and various unidentified members of the audience who asked questions. Foil and McMillan share their memories of when they were members of the Darlinettes, an all-girl swing/jazz band on campus. Foil discusses playing the clarinet; her love of music; her musical family; big band era music; and studying classical music at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. McMillan talks about playing the saxophone, band rehearsals, playing for dances and the camaraderie between band members. She also discusses campus life and the campus dress code. Both interviewees comment on musical arrangements, monetary compensations for band appearances, band uniforms, their families' thoughts about the band, campus rules and regulations, and class jackets.
