The State Normal and

and
THE WAR
The though I and activities of I he faculty and students
of every educational institution in the nation have been
very definitely affected toy the conditions arising in the
United Stales since war was declared against Germany
in April 1917. The State Normal and Industrial College
is an institution for women only, and for that reason the
influence of the war has not been so direct as it has been
in the institutions for men. The colleges for men have, of
course, sent to the front many of their students. While
the institutions for women have not toeen called upon to
render service in this form, they have been called upon to
render service along many other lines of activity.
The following detailed account has been prepared by
students under the direction of the History Department
of (he College, and needs no word of explanation from me.
I should like to state, however, that along with the work-
undertaken by the students there has been manifested a
tine spirit of patriotism which, in some respects at least,
is more important than the practical and concrete things
accomplished. The students have voluntarily surrendered
