Dr. Sudie Duncan Sides was born in Henderson, NC, July 1, 1939. Her family moved to Ohio early in her life, but she continued to regularly visit family in North Carolina. Dr. Sides attended Woman's College of the University of North Carolina and graduated in 1961 with a degree in History and Literature. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Chapel Hill. She taught at Lenoir Rhyne College, Bennett College, and San Franciso State University. From 1980 to 2008, she was on the History faculty at the San Francisco University High School where she was also Head of the History Department from 1985-1993. In this interview, Dr. Sides discusses growing up in Ohio and North Carolina, her family and education before college, and attending Woman's College and Chapel Hill. Dr. Sides discusses her remembrances of Woman's College, faculty, administrators, friends, social and political atmosphere, and campus life. Dr. Sides also recalls her involvement in the 1960 sit-in movement at Woolworth's in Greensboro, where she was accompanied by her friend Betty Luning (nee McIver).
