Nancy Ryckman was born in Detroit Michigan on June 21, 1948. She attained her AB in Geography and her AMLS (Library Science) from the University of Michigan as well as an MEd. in Guidance and Counseling from UNCG. Ms. Ryckman worked at the library at the University of Nebraska at Omaha for 5 years before taking a job at Jackson Library at UNCG in 1977 as a map Librarian in the Reference Department. Over the course of her career, Ms. Ryckman served variously as map Librarian, Assistant Head of the Reference Department, liaison for various campus departments, committees, and was involved heavily with collection management for the library. Ms. Ryckman retired from UNCG in January 2016 with 39 years of service and was conferred Librarian Emerita status. Ms. Ryckman recounts her early life, education, and her career at UNCG in this interview. She discusses at length her time at UNCG, her work responsibilities, memorable events and people, and finally her reflections on what UNCG means to her and its future.
