Dr. Jeffrey Patton was born in 1952 in Charleroi, PA. He attended Bowling Green University for his bachelor's in English and Geography, and for his Master's. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1980. Dr. Patton's research has focused on cognitive mapping, the history of cartography, scientific visualization, and geographic education, particularly studying maps as communication devices. In his interview, Dr. Patton discusses his early life, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the Geography Department.
