Sarah M. 'Sally' Robinson (1939- ) graduated in 1961 from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, which later became The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), with a degree in physical education. She returned to teach in the School of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in 1976, retiring after twenty-two years in 1998 from UNCG. Robinson describes student development opportunities available at Woman's College, the expectations of student responsibility and students' training to become responsible citizens. She discusses responsible freedom, the self-governance system and the leadership roles played by physical education majors on campus. She recollects the characteristics of early physical education faculty such as Mary Channing Coleman and Ethel Martus, as well as the guiding beliefs of the physical education department. She recalls mass meetings, hall meetings, the dress code and the basic core curriculum.
