James M. Lancaster (1950- ) received his undergraduate degree in 1972, his master's degree in 1974 and his doctoral degree in 1985, all from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro He was hired as assistant dean of students in 1974 and retired as associate vice chancellor of student affairs in 2002. Lancaster describes the transition from a women's college to a coeducational institution, the increase of international, commuter and part-time students and lost school traditions such as Rat Day, Jacket Day, and class rings. He discusses dynamics between men and women and residential and commuter students on student government, the increased number of males in leadership roles and the change from social to academic significance in the honor policy. He describes the university's move to provide more campus unity, the identification students feel with their departments and organizations and administrators and faculty as role models versus mentors.
