E. Doris McKinney (1921-1992) received a bachelor of science degree from Sargent College, a master of arts degree and a doctor of education degree from Boston University, and a master of public health degree from the University of Minnesota. In 1960, she joined the Department of Physical Education faculty at Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). She received the UNCG Alumni Teaching Award in 1986 and retired in 1987. She describes the collegial faculty; her experience as a minority faculty member; and influential members, such as Celeste Ulrich, Gail Hennis, June Galloway, Virginia Moomaw, and Pearl Berlin. McKinney discusses how the emphasis on research, graduate work, and program specialization changed the department and the School.
