Violinist Jeff Thayer is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Eastman
School of Music, and the Juilliard School's Pre-College division. His teachers
include Donald Weilerstein, William Preucil, Zvi Zeitlin, and Dorothy DeLay.
Previously concertmaster of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, he is currently
associate concertmaster of the North Carolina Symphony and concertmaster of the
Music Academy of the West (Santa Barbara).
A native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Mr. Thayer began violin lessons with his
mother at the age of three. At fourteen, he went to study with Jose Antonio Campos
at the Conservatorio Superior in Cordoba, Spain. He has appeared as soloist with the
Jupiter Symphony, the Cleveland Institute of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Music
Academy of the West Festival Orchestra, the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, the
Nittany Valley Symphony Orchestra, and the Conservatory Orchestra of Cordoba,
among others. He attended Keshet Eilon (Israel), Ernen Musikdorf (Switzerland),
Music Academy of the West, Aspen, New York String Orchestra Seminar, The
Quartet Program, and, as the 1992 Pennsylvania Governor Scholar, Interlochen Arts
Camp. Other festivals include the Mainly Mozart Festival (San Diego), Festival der
Zukunft, and the Tibor Varga Festival (both in Switzerland).
Awards include the Stephen Hahn/Lillybelle Foundation Award in Violin from the
Music Academy of the West, the Starling Foundation Award, the George Eastman
Scholarship, and the Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Mr.
Thayer was a winner of the Tuesday Musical Club Scholarship Auditions in Akron,
OH (2000), the Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition (1999), the first
place winner in the Fort Collins Symphony Young Artist Competition (1999), the
American String Teacher's Association Competition in Pennsylvania and Delaware
(1997), the Gladys Comstock Summer Scholarship Competition (1993), the Ithaca
College Solo Competition, and the Phyllis Triolo Competition (1992).
Bonnie Thron is the principal cellist of the North Carolina Symphony. She
performs chamber music and recitals throughout the east coast and is a member of
the Thron -Mahonske cello - piano duo. Ms. Thron spent eight years leading a
double life as a cellist and a registered nurse with Johns Hopkins Health System in
Baltimore, Maryland. The demands of her current symphony position and other
musical engagements, along with those of a boisterous four year old, have pulled her
away from the nursing field altogether at this time. Thron was a member of the
Peabody Trio from 1987 to 1991. Previously she was the assistant principal cellist of
the Denver Symphony Orchestra. For several years Ms. Thron freelanced in New
York City with many groups such as the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, Speculum
Musicae and the Herrick Quartet. She has joined the Apple Hill Chamber Players
many times as a guest artist and frequently returns to the Apple Hill Center for
Chamber Music in the summer to teach and perform with her husband Fred
Jacobowitz, a clarinetist. Ms. Thron has performed concertos with the Orpheus
Chamber Ensemble, the Juilliard Orchestra, the Panama National Orchestra, the
Vermont Symphony Orchestra and various other orchestras in her home state of New
Hampshire. She received Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Juilliard School.
Her teachers include Lynn Harrell, Norman Fischer and Elsa Hilger.
