Esther M. Shelton (1951- ) was born in Durham County, North Carolina, and grew up in the town of Rougemont. Shelton graduated from UNCG in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. After working as a social worker for a number of years in North Carolina, she returned to UNCG and earned a master's degree in business administration in 1987. She continued working as a certified public accountant.
