The Class of 1897 folder contains material pertaining to the 1897 graduating class of North Carolina State Normal and Industrial College (State Normal, now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro). Included in the folder are programs from the 1897 commencement ceremony, one of which contains songs and hymns, and a dinner program with menu items and poetry. There are also two alumnae directories, which include students' maiden and married names as well as their years of attendance. There are two articles from the State Normal Magazine, including the hand-written rough draft and final article titled "The Duty of the Class of '97 to the State," written by Bertha M. Donnelly, and the article "The Philanthropy of Dorothea Lynde Dix," written by Julian S. Carr, this article also includes a photocopied photograph of Julian S. Carr. Of particular interests are the commencement address titled "The Forgotten Man," by Walter H. Page, and the list of the students who won the best essays for the Class of 1897.
