Description
This folder includes correspondence from Metts serving as the State Director of Selective Service as well as Adjutant General. Letters request that members of Selective Service continue in their duties while fighting tapers off, as the need for service remains (additional inductions will occur to replace servicemen who get released and to maintain an “Army of Occupation”). Several communications speak to the eventual liquidation of the Selective Service System. Of interest is the transcription of Governor Cherry’s remarks during the presentation ceremony in which Lewis was awarded the Certificate of Merit and Selective Service Medal. Also included is the certificate of appointment from 1940 naming Lewis as a member of Local Board No. 2.
