History Of Revolution Cotton Mills.
In the Spring of 1899 1. Sternberger who was then located at
Clio, S. C., projected building a Cotton Mill at that point or some
other point more suitably located for the purpose of manufacturing
cotton, and he and his Brother, H. Sternberger, in looking into
this natter mere fully concluded that the suitability of getting
the proper labor was more to be taken in consideration than the proximity of the Mill to the cotton plantation and, therefore, in looking over the situation in different cities were induced by Messrs.
Moses H# and Ceasar cone of the Proximity Mills of Greensboro, N. C,
to locate at Greensboro and go into the manufacturing of Canton
Flannel, the jotKL&Kfc product which up to that time had only been
made by one Southern Mill, and that Mill did not make this class of
goods exclusively, they formed in the Spring of 1899 a corporation
called Revolution Cotton Mills, which is located in Guilford county,
Gilmer Township, near Greensboro, IT. C. with the capitalization of
$300,000, half of this stock being taken by the Messrs. Sternberger
and the other half by the Messrs. Cone arid their friends,
seventy-six acres of ground was bought from the "essrs. Cone to
which later three more acres were bought, making a total bought by
the Mills of seventy-nine acres. Ground was broken in April 1899
and the Mill completed and put in operation in September 1900,
there being 15000 Ring Spindles and 360 Looms, the capacity of the
Mill' being put in operation at that time. The outside of the Mill
and ware-house buildings and store had been built for the convenience of the operatives, also a hotel and about 100 dwelling houses,
the total inhabitants of the town at that time or about that time
were about 600."
The Officers of the Company are:
E. Sternberger, Pres, J. W.Cone, V. Pres., H. Sternberger, Sec. &
Treas. The Board of Directors being the above named Officers, as
well as Mr. Ceasar Cone and one or two Baltimore Stock-holders.
After several years successful operation the capacity of the
Mill was about doubled and its present number of Spindles is 31000,
and Looms 820, and in addition to making canton Flannels, they now
produce also white cotton and colored cotton flannels, and during
