Dear Sir:
I am writing the history of cotton
manufacturing in north Carolina, and your name
has been handed to me as one who could aid me in
collecting material on the subject. If you have
anything in the way of newspaper pamphlets, or magazines
that deal with any phase of the subject, and will lend
them to me, I shall greatly appreciate the kindness.
Or if you will write me something from your personal
knowledge in regard to cotton mills—anything—where the
help comes from, why the operatives come to the cotton mills,
the pay they receive, what kinds of goods are manufactured,
capitalization of the mills, the mills as town builders, etc.
As you perhaps know, very little has been written
heretofore on the subject, and I am anxious to make my
paper as accurate and exhaustive as possible.
Thanking you for any help that you
may give me,
Yours truly,
Clara Booth Byrd.
A collection of letters related to requests for information for “The History, Development, and Influence of Cotton Mills in North Carolina”. The inquiries were made by State Normal and Industrial College librarian Annie F. Petty and future alumnus Clara Booth Byrd. Assisting in the research were Bernard Cone, D. A. Tompkins, and representatives of many cotton mills and banks.
