Description
This folder contains documents relevant to the question of whether or not supervised dancing should be allowed at Guilford College. The possibility was a topic of debate as many parents considered dancing to lead children down the path of evil. When Guilford finally allowed chapheroned dancing, the decision was met with mixed opinions. Some expressed surprise approval, while others saw damnation on the horizon. These opinions are expressed in the extensive correpondence in the folder. Included are petitions; one for parents against dancing at Guilford, and one by undergraduates agreeing to "refrain from any infraction of the college tradition in regard to dancing" until college trustees make their decision on the matter. There are ballots in the folder that helped decide the vote.
