Vol. 1, No. 1 Palm Beach, Florida November, 1943 Spate GeULbate fyilsU BtlUidcxf Blimp Broadcast Highlights Program Hundreds of SPARS and spectators wore thrilled with the blimp-to-Flagler P. irk broadcast Monday night by RM 3/C Dorothy Thomas and Dorothy Rankin RM 3/C, both of Miami District Communications. This was a part of the four-way national hook-up commemorating the SPARS birthday. The program included speeches by Vice-Admiral Russell R. Waesche, Commandant of the Coast Guard, and Lieutenant Commander Dorothy Stratton, head of the Women's Reserve, from Washington, D. C; a program from the Academy in New London, Conn." and a broadcast of Naval Air Operations at the CG Salem Air Base. Dorothy Tuttle Y 3/C of the Station was interviewed as the first SPAR to go on active duty. The glee club of I lit company 101 and the band furnished music from Palm Beach. Sun and Surf Club will be open on Wednesdays from 1730 to 1900 for recreational swims and various games including tennis, softball and volleyball for the month of November. Let's all take advantage of this activity. Ship's Party Held On Pa*io To Celebrate Spars First Year Of Service SPARS of the U. S. S. Blltmore celebrated their first anniversary with a Ships Party on board Tuesday night. The big event of the evening was the cutting of the many-tiered birthday cake by Lt. Teresa M. Crowley, the Assistant to the Executive. She presented the first piece of cake to Captain William J. Keester, the Commanding Officer of the Station. Fruit punch was served with the cake to the crew and guests. A band from Boca Raton furnished music for dancing In the patio. Officers and enlisted personnel mingled freely in true ships party style. Basketball, boxing, and wrestling are the sports of the season for the Coast Guardsmen here. Practice is held at the West Palm Beach High School Gymnasium 19 to 22. Games are to be scheduled with Morrison Field and Camp Murphy. All interested in participating see W. E. Way. Carpenter Heis- ley Is the Coach of the basketball team. Vice-Ad- miral Russell R. Waesche. Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, speaking concerning the SPARS birthday, said: "A year of trial has proven the wisdom of establishing the Woman's Reserve. Women have now taken over an Important share of the service's shore routines. They are functioning satisfactorily on jobs which require more than the ordinary degree )f intelligence and ability to take re- ;ponsibility." Md. The SPARS now number 5,500 enlisted women and 450 officers. This exceeds the original goal of 5,000 trained women on the job by the end of 1943. The proposed maximum strength is 8,000 enlisted personnel and S00 officers. November 23 is the actual anniversary date. The week of November 21- 27 has been nationally designated as SPAR First Anniversnrv Week an ! w'll be celebrated here with a program on the 27th.
