the

Carolina
Greensboro)
,
serving
as
chair
of the
Department
of
Nursing
from
1960
to
1966
.
Alice
Crowther
Boehret
was
born
in
Philadelphia
,
Pennsylvania
, on
January
2
,
1919
, and
grew
up
in
Philadelphia
and
Wildwood
,
New
Jersey
.
Boehret
graduated
Germantown
High
School
in
1937
, then
entered
nursing
training
at
Jefferson
Medical
College
Hospital
School
of
Nursing
. She
finished
in
1941
and
worked
as a
graduate
nurse
until
she
passed
the
state
boards
in
1942
. In
early
1942
,
Boehret
joined
the
Army
Nurse
Corps
and was
sent
to
Fort
Story
,
Virginia
,
where
she
pent
two
years
in the
station
hospital
. In
February
1944
, she was
transferred
briefly
to the
74th
General
Hospital
at
Fort
Jackson
,
South
Carolina
, and then to
Camp
Kilmer
,
New
Jersey
,
where
the
74th
embarked
for
England
aboard
the
RMS
Queen
Mary
.
Boehret
became
sick
during
the
voyage
and
spent
her
first
few
weeks
in
England
hospitalized
. In
May
she
joined
the
74th
in
Hoylake
and
later
in
Wraxhall
,
where
a
hospital
had been
set
up
in
Tyntesfield
Park
. In
June
1945
,
Boehret
went
with the
unit
to
France
,
where
she
remained
until
November
1945
when
she
returned
to
Camp
Butler
,
Pennsylvania
.
Boehret
was
discharged
as a
first
lieutenant
in
May
1946
.
Boehret
attended
the
Woman’s
College
of the
University
of
North
Carolina
(now
the
University
of
North
Carolina
Greensboro)
on the
GI
Bill
and
received
a
bachelor’s
degree
in
French
in
1950
. She
returned
to
Philadelphia
to
teach
at
Albert
Einstein
Hospital
. In
1957
,
Boehret
accepted
a
position
at the
Woman’s
College
in the
newly
formed
Deparment
of
Nursing
; she
became
chairman
of the
department
in
1960
.
Boehret
left
the
school
in
1966
to
pursue
a
doctorate
degree
in
nursing
at
Columbia
University
, from
which
she
graduated
in
1972
. She then
helped
establish
the
baccalaureate
nursing
program
at
Rutgers
University
in
Camden
,
New
Jersey
.
Boehret
retired
from
Rutgers
in
1984
. She
died
20
November
,
2008
.
