Dorothy E. Wain Thompson (1912-1999) of Rowan County, North Carolina, served in the WAAC and WAC during World War II .
Dorothy E. Wain Thompson of Granite Quarry, North Carolina, joined WAAC in January 1943. After basic training at Daytona Beach, Florida, Thompson was stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Devens, Massachusetts, for administrative and overseas training. In July 1943 she arrived in England as member of the 76th Company, First WAAC Separate Battalion, the first WAAC contingent to be sent overseas. There, Thompson worked as a stenographer for the VIII Bomber Command until she was appointed personal secretary to General James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle." After the war, she married Curtis Thompson, and from 1961 to 1976 worked with the Office of Civil Defense in Dallas. |
