Fairbrother
of
Raleigh
,
North
Carolina
,
served
as a
physical
therapist
in the
United
States
Army
Medical
Specialst
Corps
from the
1965
to
1968
. She
later
worked
as a
teacher’s
assistant
.
Alice
Park
Fairbrother
was
born
in
Raleigh
,
North
Carolina
. She
attended
the
Women’s
College
of the
University
of
North
Carolina
[now
University
of
North
Carolina
at
Greensboro]
,
where
she
earned
a
bachelor’s
degree
in
1965
in
physical
education
as
well
as a
state
teacher’s
licensure
. In the
summer
of
1965
,
Fairbrother
joined
the
Army
Medical
Specialist
Corps
and
attended
the
physical
therapy
program
at
Fort
Sam
Houston
,
Texas
. The
following
summer
she was
stationed
at
Fort
Bragg
,
North
Carolina
,
where
she
met
her
husband
Woody
. The
Fairbrothers
were
transferred
to
Fort
Knox
,
Kentucky
, in
June
of
1967
. There,
Alice
Park
Fairbrother
was
honorably
discharged
from the
armed
services
after
three
years
.
After
Woody
Fairbrother
returneded
from
service
in
Vietnam
in
1969
, they
moved
to
Clemson
,
South
Carolina
,
where
he
became
the
instructor
of a
ROTC
program
. In
1982
, the
Fairbrothers
settled
in
Raleigh
,
where
Alice
began
to
volunteer
in the
local
school
system
and
eventually
worked
as a
teacher’s
assistant
for
eight
years
in the
school
system
.
Fairbrother
later
volunteered
at the
local
hospital
in her
free
time
.
