(Women’s
Army
Corps)
from
1943
to
1945
.
Kathryn
Fulner
Wakefield
was
born
in
Brooklyn
,
New
York
, on
29
February
1920
, and
raised
in
Hillsdale
,
New
Jersey
. In
1939
, she
graduated
from
Park
Ridge
High
School
. She
went
on to
complete
a
four
year
business
course
and
work
in a
leather
tannery
office
in
New
York
.
Wakefield
enlisted
in the
WAAC
in
1943
and was
sent
to
Daytona
Beach
,
Florida
, for
basic
training
. She then
attended
the
Army
Administration
School
in
Alpine
,
Texas
. In
summer
1943
,
Wakefield
was
assigned
to
Greenwood
Army
Air
Base
in
Mississippi
,
where
she
re-enlisted
in the
WAC
. In
December
of that
year
, she was
transferred
to
Jackson
,
Mississippi
,
where
her
duties
included
:
colonel’s
secretary
,
recruiting
,
court
stenography
, and
administration
office
work
.
While
stationed
there, she
met
Carl
Wakefield
, and the
two
were
married
in
July
of
1944
. In the
fall
of that
year
, she was
transferred
to
Dothan
,
Alabama
,
where
she
did
court
stenography
. She was
discharged
from the
WAC
in
October
of
1945
.
After
completing
her
service
,
Wakefield
moved
to
Sebring
,
Florida
, to
live
with her
husband
.
Following
Carl’s
discharge
in
September
1946
, the
couple
moved
to
Wauchula
,
Florida
, and then to
Greensboro
,
North
Carolina
.
Wakefield
was a
stay-at-home
mom
until
her
children
were in
school
, and then
worked
part-time
as a
nurse's
aide
and at
Gate
City
Savings
.
Wakefield
died
on
25
November
,
2012
.
