Hazel
Meeks
Jones
was
born
in
1918
to
sharecroppers
in
Talliferro
County
,
Georgia
. She
graduated
from
high
school
in
Crawfordville
and then
completed
three
years
of
nursing
school
at the
Medical
College
of
Georgia
in
Augusta
.
Following
graduation
she
worked
at a
tuberculosis
sanitarium
in
Alto
,
Georgia
.
Jones
enlisted
in the
Army
Nurse
Corps
(ANC)
in
1942
and
completed
basic
training
at
Fort
Rucker
,
Alabama
. She was
assigned
to the
station
hospital
in
Atlanta
,
where
she
worked
as an
operating
room
scrub
nurse
for a
year
and a
half
. In
late
1943
,
Jones
was
sent
overseas
to the
372nd
Station
Hospital
in
Kalaikunda
,
India
,
where
she
remained
until
fall
1945
.
Upon
her
return
to the
United
States
,
Jones
was
stationed
at the
Oliver
General
Hospital
in
Augusta
as an
ANC
reservist
. She then
joined
the
regular
army
and was
transferred
to
Tripler
Hospital
in
Honolulu
,
Hawaii
,
where
she
served
for
four
years
during
the
Korean
War
mostly
working
on the
ENT
(ear
nose
and
throat)
service
.
In
March
1952
,
Jones
was
transferred
to
Walter
Reed
Hospital
in
Washington
,
D.C.
, and in
August
of that
year
she
married
Bob
Jones
, an
army
medical
supply
coworker
from
Tripler
.
Jones
was
later
sent
to
Ireland
General
Hospital
at
Fort
Knox
,
Kentucky
,
before
being
transferred
overseas
to the
2nd
General
Hospital
in
Germany
,
where
she was in
charge
of the
neurosurgery
ward
. In
1961
,
Jones
returned
to the
United
States
and was
stationed
at
Womack
Army
Hospital
in
Fayetteville
,
North
Carolina
. She
retired
from the
army
in
1965
as a
major
, and the
Jones
'
continued
to
reside
in
Fayetteville
.
Jones
died
17
November
,
2005
.
