designer

primarily

Cincinnati

Ohio
.
Marjorie
Randolph
Suggs
Edwards
was
born
and
raised
in an
immigrant
community
in
Passaic
,
New
Jersey
, by her
Cuban
grandmother
. She
held
several
manufacturing
and
social
work
jobs
before
enlisting
in the
Women’s
Army
Auxiliary
Corps
(later
the
WAC)
in
February
1943
.
Edwards
attended
basic
training
with a
segregated
African
American
unit
in
Fort
Des
Moines
,
Iowa
.
During
the
course
of the
war
she
performed
personnel
work
at
Fort
Custer
,
Michigan
;
attended
Special
Services
School
at
Washington
and
Lee
University
in
Lexington
,
Virginia
;
served
as
special
services
officer
at
Fort
Sheridan
in
Illinois
; and
worked
in a
motor
pool
at
Fort
Sam
Houston
in
Texas
.
Discharged
as a
sergeant
in
December
1945
,
Edwards
attended
the
Traphagen
School
of
Fashion
in
New
York
City
on the
GI
Bill
and
studied
interior
design
. She
operated
an
interior
design
shop
until
moving
to
Cincinnati
,
Ohio
, in the
mid-1940s
to
marry
. She
continued
her
design
work
for
forty
years
, and in
retirement
was a
volunteer
at the
Durham
VA
hospital
and a
local
elementary
school
.
Marjorie
Edwards
passed
away
in
2006
.
