. She
attended
nursing
school
at
Symmes
Arlington
Hospital
and then
worked
in the
operating
room
of
Marlboro
Hospital
. She
joined
the
Army
Nurse
Corps
in
March
1942
, and was
stationed
at
Fort
Adams
and
Fort
Getty
in
Rhode
Island
until
December
1942
when
she was
transferred
to
Charleston
,
SC
, for
overseas
training
.
McCormack
set
sail
later
that
month
, with
stops
in
Cuba
,
Trinidad
, and
Ascension
Island
before
reaching
Ghana
on
12
January
1943
. On
March
7
when
she was
transferred
to
Dakar
,
Senegal
,
where
she
remained
until
February
1944
.
McCormack
was
transferred
to
Camp
Huckstep
outside
Cairo
,
Egypt
,
following
a
brief
stay
in
Casablanca
,
Morrocco
. She
returned
to the
U.S
.
via
a
hospital
ship
out
of
Oran
,
Algeria
, and was
assigned
to
troop
trains
transporting
wounded
soldiers
out
of
New
York
. She was
later
honorably
discharged
at
Greensboro
,
N.C
.
Bernice
McCormack
passed
away
on
24
September
2007
.
