. She

Michael's
Elementary

Mills
High
School
for
two
years

before
moving
to
Washington
D.C.

where
she
graduated
from
Central
High
School
in
June
1942
.
On
16
September
1942
, at the
age
of
seventeen
,
Bradford
entered
nursing
school
at
Garfield
Memorial
Hospital
.
When
the
United
States
Cadet
Nurse
Corps
was
established
in
1943
,
Bradford's
class
was
encouraged
to
join
,
which
most
of them
did
. In the
spring
of
1944
,
Bradford
was
sent
to
Children's
Hospital
in
Philadelphia
,
Pennsylvania
, and then to
St
.
Elizabeth's
Hospital
in
Washington
,
D.C
. to
study
psychiatry
,
after
which
she
returned
to
Garfield
Memorial
Hospital
and was then
transferred
to
Newton
D
.
Baker
Army
Hospital
in
Martinsburg
,
West
Virginia
for the
remainder
of her
training
.
After
the
war
,
Bradford
applied
to the
Veteran's
Administration
and was
assigned
to
Winter
General
Army
Hospital
in
Topeka
,
Kansas
in
February
1946
. She
worked
with
psychiatric
patients
and
noted
psychiatrists
and
brothers
,
Drs
.
Karl
and
William
Menninger
.
While
at
Winter
General
Bradford
met
her
future
husband
,
who
was
working
as a
charge
attendant
.
In
October
1946
,
Bradford
resigned
from her
position
and
moved
back
to
Washington
,
D.C
. to
assist
her
ailing
mother
, and her
future
husband
transferred
to
Mount
Alto
Veterans
Administration
Hospital
, also in
Washington
,
D.C
. They were
married
26
November
1946
.
Bradford
became
pregnant
soon
after
, but
continued
to
work
as a
nurse
until
the
birth
of their
first
child
.
After
the
birth
of their
second
child
, in
order
to
keep
her
nursing
license
current
, she
worked
part
time
as a
private
duty
nurse
through
the
Official
Registry
of the
American
Nurses
'
Association
.
After
Bradford's
husband
retired
in
1976
, she
went
to
work
for a
family
practitioner
for the
next
twenty
years
.
