Glimpses of Volume 8 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF GREENSBORO. N. C. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE APRIL, 1960 Number 2 Chamber's 83rd Annual Meeting Attracts 350 Centra! Business District Course Has 13 From City The first session in a series of five Central Business District Seminars, sponsored by the Institute of Government at Chapel Hiy and the Ford Foundation was held last Wednesday, April 13 at the King Cotton Hotel, Greensboro. Designed for civic and business leaders to encourage closer working relationships between community leaders and governmental officials, the course is being presented to approximately thirty-five leading citizens from Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem. Two sessions will be held in Greensboro; two in High Point and one in Winston-Salem. The meeting opened with a discussion on the "importance of the Central Business District to the city", led by Earl W. Weller, Municipal Consultant and Member, City Planning Commission, Rochester, New York. Other speakers at Wednesday's session included Dr. R. C. Heath, Wake Forest College, Ronald Scott, Greensboro City Planning Director, and Robert Kimley, head of the advance planning section of the State Highway Commission. Each session will begin promptly at 3:30 p.m. and continue until 9 :00 with a break for dinner from 5 to 7. The series will cover the problems of the central business districts and the (Cont., Page 5, Col. 2) Ceasar Cone Receives Chamber's "Distinguished Citizen Award"; Speaker Urges Participation in Governmental Atfairs Thomas R. Reid, Civic and Governmental Affairs Manager of Ford Motor Company, outlined a nine-point program for businessmen to follow in creating wider participation in political and governmental affairs, when he delivered the address at the 83rd Annual Dinner Meeting of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Reid was introduced by John B. Hatfield, Vice President and immediate past President of the Chamber. N. P. Hayes presided at the meeting which was held in the ballroom of the King Cotton Hotel on April 12. It was attended by a capacity crowd of 350 persons. Ceasar Cone was presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award. Miles Wolff presented the citation, which read: "In grateful recognition of his many and enduring contributions to the progress and development of Greensboro and the Piedmont area of North Carolina. "In the business world he has directed with distinction and success the affairs of a great industrial establishment which has long served as one of the economic bulwarks of the Greensboro community. "He has provided generous financial support to numerous civic and public projects which have enriched the lives of our people. But, above all, he has unselfishly devoted his time, his great mental talents, his energy and wise counsel, and his persuasive influence to the successful culmination of projects which have placed Greensboro in (Cont., Page 6, Col. 1) Ceasar Cone is presented the Chamber's Distinguished Citizen Award by Miles Wolff at the 83rd annual dinner meeting. City Beautiful Week To Be April 25-30 City Beautiful Week will be held April 25-30. This announcement was made recently by Mrs. Marvin B. Bennett, chairman of the Chamber's City Beautiful Committee for 1960. Plans for the week consist of a bus tour for some forty business and civic leaders on Tuesday, April 26. The group will begin the day with a breakfast meeting at which time a film, (Cont., Page 5, Col. 3)
