Katherine Stern was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. She attended the Woman's College at Duke University, and returned to Wilmington after graduation to work for The Wilmington Post. Stern discusses her marriage and move to Greensboro in the early 1950s. After moving to Greensboro, Stern became very involved in volunteerism and the community life of the city. She recounts her early work with the Cerebral Palsy School, her support of political campaigns, and her efforts to preserve historic Blandwood Mansion. Stern discusses the increasing role of volunteerism and non-profits in Greensboro. She also relates her involvement with the Jewish community, the Rotary Club of Greensboro, the United Way, the Duke Board of Directors, and the Duke Alumni Association.
