ABSCONDED,
FROM my plantation in Bladen County, N. C., on the morning of Sunday, the 4th day of July, 1852, my negro man SIMON, who is said to be about 40 years of age, light complexion, tolerably tall and raw-boned, with a scar on his breast and one on his face (perhaps the left side) near the corner of his mouth, speaks in rather a long tone of voice, and most of his front teeth are missing, has large feet, stoops a little forward when walking, and moves rather slowly. I expect he will endeavor to make his way back to Alamance County, where he says he formerly lived, and belonged to a Mr. Dickey, who I think he says owns his wife. I purchased him in April last from Messrs. Arch'd. [Archibald] S. McKay and Arch'd Patterson.
I will pay a reward of twenty dollars to any person who will apprehend said negro in this County and eliver[sic] him to me, or secure him in the jail of this County or twenty-five dollars for his apprehension and safe confinementin the jail of any other County in North Carolina, so that I get him again.
THEOPHILUS TATUM.
