ARTbeat, July-August 1996 jARTbear ;Alie.mcrHve. Resources of the. TJH^id FROM THE PRESIDENT \T/^ Pride '96 has come and IN V^/gone. For those of you who were not able to attend, I must tell you that it was absolutely fantastic. Throughout the entire weekend, I saw old friends, made some new friends, and worked very hard with other volunteers to make Pride happen. I am very proud of ART and our involvement in putting on the Under the Rainbow Reception and the Rainbow Ball. I also want to acknowledge the award that Pride gave to ART during the rally on Sunday, June 9. It was great to be a part of that atmosphere even while the rain (sometimes in buckets) came down. There have been so many wonderful things said about the Rainbow Ball and our efforts at ART in putting on such a grand event. There are so many people who need to be recognized and thanked, which we did in a program that was placed on each table of the Rainbow Ball. These people will be recognized again in another place in this issue of the ARTbeat. During all of this effort to make sure that we had named everyone, guess what , we missed somebody. Due to an editing error I removed the last name from our Board of Directors list on the program. I must say that Sharon Snow is definitely a board member and also contributed greatly to the Pride weekend Thanks Sharon. To add to all this activity, several ART volunteers helped to move the office from its location on Grove Street to the Friendship Friends Meeting Building on Guilford College Road We completed the move the Thursday after Pride. Thanks to all who helped us, especially Mary, who provided us with some tools that were needed unexpectedly. Thank God for a well-tooled lesbian. Now that we have moved to a new office, I would like to challenge all of the volunteers who left because of concerns about our prior location to come back and work the lines. Remember, all we ask is a commitment for one night each month. That would return the Hotline to a 7 days per week schedule. With so much completed in terms of Pride c96, let's make sure that the motto "Celebrate/Activate/Educate" doesn't actually end now but continues through the rest of the year. All three are very important to our visibility to the community at large. Education and activism are critical in this election year. Issues such as same sex marriage, non-discrimination policies, hate crimes, HIV/AIDS, and many others provide opportunities to educate. Activism makes sure that these issues remain at the forefront of the discussion and that religious political extremists do not dictate their views to everyone through the political process. Celebration comes when progress is made, whether it be one on one education or when we actually win landmark events such as the Supreme Court decision on Colorado's Amendment 2.
