Community Meeting, Feb. 22
There will be a Community Meeting sponsored by
Equality North Carolina (formerly NC Pride PAC) on
Monday, February 22 at 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Topics for
discussion include what we can do to strengthen and
diversify the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and
Allied community in the Triad and what legislative
issues LGBT people in NC should be aware of in 1999.
The meeting will be held in the Gallery in Founders
Hall at Guilford College. Call Rose at 316-3225 if you
have any questions.
Directions: Going west on W. Friendly Ave., turn
right onto New Garden Rd. Turn right onto Arcadia
(the second light) onto campus. Follow the road
around the construction to the left, then take the first
right. Founders Hall is at the top of the hill on the
right. There is some parking there, and more a little
further down this road. The Gallery is on the second
floor. If you get lost, people will be glad to help you
find it!
TAN Sets Goals for 1999
During the first meeting of 1999, TAN Board
members discussed the following items as goals for the
year. These goals apply only to TAN, not TAN-PAC.
Since there will be limited local elections in 1999, the
educational/advocacy interest of TAN are where
primary attention will be focused.
The first two items are not goals only for 1999, but
have been part of the overall focus of TAN since its
inception.
The first is that we have begun to set up meetings
with the elected officials supported in the recent
election by TAN-PAC through the generous
contributions of the local community. We will
probably meet first with both the Forsyth and Guilford
County Sheriffs, as both returned very positive
questionnaires to TAN-PAC. One issue to be
discussed with them is how to make the reporting of
hate crimes less threatening to those who are not 'out5.
After meeting with the Sheriffs, we will continue to
schedule meeting with other officials.
Secondly, we continue to serve as watchdogs of the
local media. This is a job with which anyone can help.
We have excellent coverage of local newspapers, but
due to the number of television newscasts, we cannot
always keep up with stories that present the LGBT
community in unfair ways. And, of course, we are
always in need of spokespeople who can be reached
quickly for comment. We have found that there is
seldom more than a few hours notice of impending
stories, so persons who would like to be involved must
be readily accessible by phone.
