The Campaign to End Homophobia P.O. Box 819 • Cambridge, MA 02139 • 617-868-8280 Dear Friend: We invite you to become a member of the Campaign to End Homophobia. The Campaign is the only international organization committed exclusively to developing and distributing educational resources on homophobia. By becoming a member, you are joining with hundreds of other people who believe that education is a powerful and effective way to end homophobia. In addition, when you join the Campaign, you receive a subscription to Empathy, reduced prices on educational resources available through the Campaign, and reduced registration at Campaign Conferences and Institutes. To become a member, all you have to do is complete and return the membership form attached to the enclosed brochure. We've set annual membership rates on a sliding scale, from $5. to $500. We encourage those of you who can afford it to become a benefactor ($500.) or sponsor ($250.), and we equally welcome those friends who can afford $5. to $40. If you're already receiving Empathy - we still want you to become a member of the Campaign. The Campaign is providing major financial support to Empathy and many of the articles are written by people in the Campaign network; your membership will allow us to continue providing support to this important new journal. If you've made a recent contribution to The Campaign, or to Empathy, feel free to adjust your annual membership contribution accordingly. CAMPAIGN NEWS Conferences and Institutes Unfortunately, the 1990 Campaign Conference, planned for this summer in Seattle, has been cancelled. This was a difficult decision, made jointly by the Conference Planning Committee and the Steering Committee. But we feel that the decision was a good one. We were behind in the planning process, and the University of Washington, with whom we had a tentative contract, could not provide the type of meeting space we needed. Since no other space seemed to be available in the city ~ and we didn't want to burn out trying to play catch up in the planning process - we decided that the smartest thing was to cancel the Conference. The good news is that planning is already underway for a 1991 Campaign Conference in Chicago. A Chicago-based planning group is working with the Steering Committee, and we have an offer from the University of Chicago to host our Conference. In addition, Kathy Obear (an experienced workshop leader, now working on her doctorate in oppression studies at the University of Massachusetts) and Cooper Thompson (the Coordinator of the Campaign) are planning to lead Institutes on Homophobia Education this fall in several cities across North America, including Boston and Chicago. These Steering Committee: Michael Botkin, San Francisco, CA • Betsy Crane, Ithaca, NY • Steven Jones, Grinnel, IA • Pris Prutzman, Nyack, NY • Joan Schuman, Philadelphia, PA • Althea Smith, Boston, MA • Cooper Thompson, Boston, MA • Jamie Washington, Baltimore, MD • Barbara Zoloth, San Raphael, CA
