Description
Casals has received Metcalfe's letters of the 6th and the 10th. Despite his efforts to remain calm, he feels unable to continue in his state of anxiety, though he realizes that it is selfish and weak of him to confide this to her. Still, she has asked that he tell her everything. The day before, after spending the night on a train en route to Budapest, he felt so ill that he went with a friend to a doctor and told him how exhausted he was. The doctor complimented him on his sturdy constitution, but warned him that he should take steps to avoid a possible nervous breakdown, and suggested taking some time off from his concert schedule. All doctors recommend a lazy life, which is dangerous as he is easily tempted to laziness. Still, he will not give up the concerts remaining on his present tour. He expects he will recover when he sees Metcalfe.
