E. H. Sothern (1859-1933) was born in the United States to British actor E. A. Sothern, was raised and began his acting career in England, and then returned to the United States in 1883, staying for the majority of this career. By 1887, he had been hired to play romantic leading roles in Daniel Frohman's company. For the next twelve years, he would create many successful roles for Frohman, including the auctioneer from The Highest Bidder and Rudolf III/Rassendyl from The Prisoner of Zenda. He is most known for a partnership with Julia Marlowe (1865-1950) beginning in 1904, in which they agreed to tour Shakespeare plays around the country. Their first three year contract had them performing such plays as Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, Merchant of Venice, Taming of the Shrew, and Twelfth Night, among others. Separating to head their own companies in 1907, they joined forces again in 1909, this time offering more mature productions such as Macbeth. They married in 1911 and continued to tour together until Marlowe retired in 1924. Sothern continued to perform after this while Marlowe traveled the world, the two writing to each other copiously no matter where they were. Sothern died in 1933 after writing the biography of his wife and his own memoirs. This letter was written by Sothern to a Mr. Rice on an unknown date, although it is surmised to have been written between 1907-1911, as Mr. Sothern refers to Marlowe as Miss Marlowe in the letter. It reads: My dear Mr. Rice - I will put your letter before Miss Marlowe on this morning. We are both pretty well tired out _____ and I know she will feel as I do, very sorry that you find his work uncongenial in any way. We had hoped you would find plenty I [sic] do which would be agreeable to him. I will see her tomorrow and talk it over. Very Sincerely Yours E. H. Sothern Production(s) represented: Twelfth Night.
