Item note: On the afternoon of May 7, 1896, Joseph Jefferson (1829-1905) and Mrs. Louisa Drew (1820-1897) performed a rendition of Sheridan's The Rivals before a packed house at the American Theatre in New York City. In attendance: Britain's greatest actor, Sir Henry Irving. The cast was hailed as an All-Star Cast, including Joseph Jefferson as Bob Acres, William H. Crane as Sir Anthony Absolute, and Louisa Drew as Mrs. Malaprop. The all-star production was put together by Jefferson in an effort to reassert his position in the American Theatre after several failed projects and in spite of his failing health. The production toured the United States extensively during the summer of 1896. This artifact is a compilation of six star autographs from that tour. Signatures included are J Jefferson, Francis Wilson (who played the role of David), Wm. H. Crane, Robert Taber (who played the role of Jack), Louisa Drew, and Julia Marlowe-Taber (who played the role of Lydia). Julia Marlowe-Taber and Robert Taber were only married a few more years before their divorce and Julia's rise to fame as a Shakespearean actress alongside E. H. Sothern. She is more commonly known as Julia Marlowe. The signatures are on a yellowed sheet of paper. The men's signatures are signed in black ink, the women signed in blue ink. All signatures look to have been signed with different pens. The Rivals is written in a seventh hand at the top. Production(s) represented: The Comley-Barton Mme. Favart.
