Object narrative |
Clipping of the cast list from a playbill of Haverly's Theatre in Chicago, IL. The Lyceum Company was undertaking their First American Tour, and this playbill is from their first stop in Chicago of two during the tour. This engagement lasted two weeks. The program says: FOR TWO WEEKS, ENDING JANUARY 19th, 1884, ENGAGEMENT OF MR. HENRY IRVING! MISS ELLEN TERRY AND THE LYCEUM THEATRE COMPANY! Under the Direction of MR. HENRY E. ABBEY. Henry Abbey, an impresario, contracted with Irving to bring his company to the US for four tours. Abbeys relationship with Irving was highly profitable for both men; in 1892 Irving dedicated Abbeys Knickerbocker Theatre in New York when he began his American tour of that year. During the first stop in Chicago, 1884, the program lists no curtain time, although a month later, while performing their second engagement to the city, the curtain time was listed as a quarter to eight for each performance. There are two duplicate programs in this lot for The Merchant of Venice, playing on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings and a Saturday matinee. The company would perform The Bells, another popular Lyceum Company piece and star vehicle for Henry Irving, on Saturday evening. They would play The Lyons Mail on the weekdays during the second week of the engagement. Henry Irving played the role of Shylock, William Terris the role of Bassanio, and Ellen Terry the role of Portia. |
