Object narrative
This is a souvenir book from The Lyceum Company's production of "Becket" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, starring Henry Irving as Becket. The hardbound book lists the first production of BECKET as being 6th Feb., 1893, but this particular book was published in 1904 for the 1904 tour. It was purchased by a Ms. Winifred Olive Callwell in November 1904 in Edinburgh. It contains a cast list which includes Henry Irving, his son Laurence Irving, and Mabel Hackney in the role of Rosamund De Clifford, the role Ellen Terry always played before she left the company in 1902. In this book, however, Ms. Callwell has marked out the names of Laurence Irving and Mabel Hackney and listed replacement actors, possibly understudies who filled those roles on the night the show was attended. There is a synopsis of scenery on page three, followed by detailed black and white drawings depicting moments from the show. Included are pictures of Irving as Becket, Ellen Terry as Rosamund, and settings of the Prologue (A Castle in Normandy), Act I., Scene 1 (Becket's House in London), Act I., Scene 2 (Street in Northampton Leading to the Castle), Act I., Scene 4 (The Hall in Northampton Castle), Act III., Scene 1 (Montmirail - The Meeting of the Kings), Act III., Scene 2 (Outside the Wood, Near Rosamund's Bower), Act III., Scene 3 (Rosamund's Bower), and Act IV., Scene 3 (North Transept of Canterbury Cathedral). The book shows the rich artistry of the scene painting (even in black and white) and attention to detail Irving showed to the sets of his productions. There is a nice balance struck between the beauty of the sets and elements needed to tell the story well.
