She made hope and love blend. . . (Winter, Memories 448). Turn of the century theatre biographer William Winter made this flattering comment about actress Julia Marlowe (1865-1950), a sentiment shared by many theatre-goers in America during Marlowe's multi-decade career upon the stage. Julia Marlowe was born Sarah Frances Frost in England in 1865. Her parents immigrated to the United States soon thereafter and eventually settled in Cincinnati, OH, where she made her first appearance on stage in H.M.S. Pinafore at the age of twelve with the name Fanny Brough. She continued to play supporting roles in stock companies until 1884, when she solicited the services of Ada Dow and went through a self-imposed three year training program. After this she reappeared as Julia Marlowe and was quickly playing lead roles in small touring companies. Her most successful roles were Shakespeare's heroines such as Viola, Juliet, Ophelia, Beatrice, and Rosalind. By the end of 1891, friends of Marlowe's had decided she should be controlling more of her own business interests, as she was barely being paid a living wage according to the contracts arranged for her by those who stood to profit from her talents. Documents were drawn up, and soon she was making the profit she deserved. The season of 1891-1892 was the first season under her new management. This is a clipping from a program for a performance of As You Like It at Col. Sinn's New Park Theatre in New York on January 25, 1892. Marlowe played the role of Rosalind to Robert Taber's Orlando. She and Robert Taber would marry in 1894, but their marriage would not be happy. They would divorce in 1900. Production(s) represented: Hamlet. Character role(s) represented: E. H.
