Object narrative
This program is from the Irving/Terry Lyceum Theatre American Tour of 1893-1894, their fourth tour to the United States. The multi-page program is for the entire week of January 1, 1894 and depicts the inside of the Tremont Theatre on the front cover. The program is filled with advertising as many American playbills still are today. The cast list page states that this is the first week of The London Lyceum Theatre Company's engagement in Boston, and that each evening they will be performing Becket. The cast list includes Mr. Irving as Becket, Mr. William Terriss as Henry II, and Miss Ellen Terry as Rosamund De Clifford. The second page of the Lyceum credits include a synopsis of scenery, music during intermissions, and design and stage management credits. It states that Saturday Evening, January 6, the company will present Louis XI. A handwritten note on the front of the program says that its owner saw Becket on January 6, 1894, presumably at the 2 o'clock matinee. An announcement on another page of the program reveals that during the second week of the engagement in Boston, the company will present King Henry VIII, with a performance of The Bells on Jan. 13. The Fourth American Tour of the Lyceum Company was extensive. Starting with Western cities such as San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle, the company worked its way back through Minnesota and Chicago before concluding with many cities in the Northeast and Canada. They were in North America from Sept. 1893-Mar. 1894.
