Item description
Program for the Royal Lyceum Theatre production of "King Henry the Eighth" for 18 Jan. 1892, starring Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) and Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928). The program contains a cast list, synopsis of scenery, information on music and costume designs, ticket prices, management, and intermission times. The program is one sheet of paper folded in half. The back cover contains literary announcements of books that were currently for sale in area bookshops.
Object narrative
The program cover states that Mr. Henry Irving is the sole lessee and manager of the theatre and that this is The Fourteenth Season of the present Management. The cast included Henry Irving as Cardinal Wolsey, William Terriss as Henry VIII, Ellen Terry as Queen Katherine, and her son Gordon Craig as Cromwell the servant to Wolsey. The third page lists the scenery (setting) of each scene, and gives credit to the musical composer, musical director, costumers, and stage managers. Information is also given as to the prices of each seat in the theatre and how to procure tickets through Mr. Joseph Hurst in the box office (with no fees!). Intermission times, not commonly noted in programs from this period, were very specific, with each interval being different (10 minutes, 12 minutes, 15 minutes, and 6 minutes). This diversity is perhaps due to the length of time needed for costume, makeup, and/or set changes. The back cover of the program contains literary announcements for magazines and books popular during the time, including Mr. Irving's acting version of King Henry the Eighth and Bram Stoker's The Snake's Pass. Bram Stoker was the Acting and Business Manager of the theatre and a good friend of Henry Irving's. Stoker later went on to write the novel Dracula, basing the character of Dracula on Henry Irving.
