Object narrative |
Dated March 30, 1867, the evening is billed as being a benefit of Mr. J. H. Budworth, who would play the role of Rip Van Winkle in the play of the same title in the leading entertainment. J. H. Budworth was a well known minstrel actor, frequently performing in blackface. The second entertainment following Rip Van Winkle is Bull in a China Shop followed by Persecuted Dutchman! as the final farcical entertainment. The character of Rip Van Winkle was most famously played by Joseph Jefferson from the 1870s to the 1890s in a version of the play written especially for him by Dion Boucicault. This performance of Rip Van Winkle was a one night only engagement. Boston Theatre was leased to Edwin Booth and his brother-in-law J. S. Clarke for the 1866-1867 season, although Booth only performed there for limited engagements, making his first Boston appearance there after a brief retirement due to his brothers assassination of President Lincoln. Booth's main theatre, The Winter Garden in New York City, would burn down in 1867 and he would not go back into theatre management again until 1869 (Tompkins, 130-133). |
