E. H. Sothern (1859-1933) was born in the United States to British actor E. A. Sothern, was raised and began his acting career in England, and then returned to the United States in 1883, staying for the majority of this career. By 1887, he had been hired to play romantic leading roles in Daniel Frohman's company. For the next twelve years, he would create many successful roles for Frohman, including the auctioneer from The Highest Bidder and Rudolf V/Rassendyl from The Prisoner of Zenda. This cabinet card is a photo of Sothern in the role of Prince Rudolf, which he performed in 1895. A reviewer for Harper's Weekly magazine said of Sothern: [He] is a sentimental rather than a romantic actor. He commands no great sweep of passion, his fervor is small though appreciable. He has a pleasing presence, a large fund of personal humor, a good knowledge of stage technique. He knows thoroughly what he cannot do, and never attempts the impossible. He carries, in all rles [sic], that air of good breeding which charms even the masses when it comes under their notice (Dithmar 1024). Sothern would go on to partner both on stage and in life with actress Julia Marlowe. After 1904 they were accounted the foremost American Shakespearean actors of their day, performing such plays as Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet while on nationwide and British tours.
