Object narrative |
This document is a clipping of the cast list for The Lost Paradise from the program for this production. A cast list has been glued over top of another cast list on the title page of the program underneath the title of the show. Upon inspection it appears that there was a typo in the cast list, listing the wrong actress playing the role of Margaret Knowlton. A corrected list was glued over top. Maude Adams (1872-1953) played the role of Nell, a sickly factory girl. Annie Adams, Maude Adams' mother, performed in the role of Mrs. Knowlton, the wife of the factory owner. Maude was 18 years old when the show opened in Chicago in August of that year. She was a little known actress at that time, but even in this small role she received nice mentions from the critics, such as sweetly sympathetic, like a violet blushing unseen, and [She is] one of the most promising of the rising young actresses. . . (Chicago Inter Ocean, August 18, 1891) Annie and Maude had been traveling in stock companies all around the United States for years. This was Charles Frohman's Company's second season in stock performance at Proctor's Theatre. This particular clipping is dated exactly one week after the show opened in New York City. |
