Photographic postcard of Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928) from 1907-1909 wearing a ruffled lace shirt with a high neckline and a robe not unlike the one she wore earlier in her life while playing the part of Portia in ''The Merchant of Venice.'' Her hair is swept up on top of her head and she is wearing a black hat on top of the swept-up hair style. She is holding onto an embroidered curtain. The photo is from the Rotary Photographic Series. The date of 1907-1909 is assumed because the postcard indicates she was Mrs. James Carew at this time. Terry was only married briefly to Carew, an American actor who was more than twenty years her junior. This postcard was used, although no stamp or postmark is present. From the text of the correspondence, it is likely the card was sent via a personal messenger, as the author was writing to inform a Mrs. J. Wright in South Wigston (now a suburb of Leicester in England) that she would be visiting her the next day and she wanted to pick up her things from Mr. W. Mr. W. could quite possibly be Orson Wright, the founder of the town of South Wigston in the 1880s and who owned the brickworks factory there. Wright was responsible for the building of many of the buildings in South Wigston and it can be assumed they were very wealthy, as the postcard is addressed to an estate in South Wigston. Orson Wright died in 1913. Production(s) represented: The Merchant of Venice. Character role(s) represented: Mr. Henry Irving (Shylock), Miss Ellen Terry (Portia), Mr. H.
