T HE three King-doms of Nature which furnish us
with the treatments of disease are the VEGE- 19
TABLE, the MINERAL and the ANIMAL.
From the VEGETABLE world we g-et the larg-est portion.
Roots, barks, leayes, flowers and seeds contain many
• valuable medicinal ing-redients. These must be g-athered
at the rig-ht season of the year to g-et their full medicinal
value. The different parts of a plant are to be g-athered
when their juices are most abundant in them.
LEAVES should be g-athered when full grown and just
before the fading of the flower.
FLOWERS are generally gathered about the time of
their opening, either a little before or just after.
ROOTS of annual plants should be gathered before they
are in flower.
BARKS, whether of roots, branches or trunk, should be
gathered in early autumn or early spring, when they peel
ofi most easily.
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound is a purely
vegetable preparation, made from roots, herbs and seeds.
Some of them come from the fields, woods and gardens of
New England, some from other parts of the country, and
some from other countries. It contains no harmful drugs
nor narcotics, and for forty years it has been the standard
remedy for woman's ills. At first, Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound was prepared on her kitchen stove.
and today many simple remedies are prepared in a similar
tnanner.
A few of the most easily .obtained herbs for these simple ·
. remedies are published on the following pages. The herbs
are gathered at the proper time and an infusion (tea) is
made by pouring boiling water upon them and letting it
stand until it cools, keeping it tightly covered.

• "NOW I AM FEELING ALL RIGHT."
"When I was a young girl I had very poor health until I had
taken some of the Compound. My mother always had lob of
faith in it and told me when anything was tlle matter to get
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound-the medicine prepared
especially for women. A few months ago I felt that r needed
a tonic, I was tired all the time just as if I could not move one
foot ahead of the other, and my legs would ache. I took ) our
Compound and Blood Purifier alternately every day a •1d I am
feeling all right again. My advice to women is to take medidne
as soon as· you need it and not to wait until you l1ave one
foot in the grave and then expect a cure."

SAGE.
The tops and leans should be
gathered and carefully dried during
its flowet:ing season, in June and July.
An infusion (tea) made from the tops
and leaves of Sage is used when the
stomach is weak and there is a belching
of gas, and it is al so used to relieve
sickness of the stomach. The
tea may be taken cold throughout the
day, or may be used warm.
A girl ordinarily
matures between
the ages of twelve and fifteen, and
the function continues until the age of
forty-fiye, at regular intervals of
ahout twenty-eight days. The girl
who has been permitted to violate the laws of health, is
poorly nourished and imperfectly developed, should not
expect normal conditions at this time. The most common
symptoms that precede maturity are headache, nervousness,
irritability, pains in the back and limbs, dizziness, a desire
to sleep, and sluggishness of thought. When these symptoms
appear, rest and recreation are needed. Sleep eight
or nine hours every night, preferably alone, in a room with
the windows open. Eat simple, nourishing food. To build
up the system and strengthen the nerves, take Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound with the Blood Purifier
in alternate doses. Constipation is often present and
L MATURITY I
. Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills should ! a taken to keep
the bowels regular.
REGULARITY is essential to health. (Once established,
the functior. should reappear about every twentyeight
days, excepting with preg nant women, nursing
mothers, and at the Change of Life.) EYery woman,
young or old, should know the importance of establishing
and maintaining normal action for this natural condition
as the foundation of health . Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound will assist in establishing the function
in a normal manner .
"NOW I AM STRONG AND WELL."
"Your medicine has helped me wonderfully.
Wb.en I was a girl 18 years old I
was always sickly and delicate, and I was
troubled with suppression. Three doctors
gave me up and said I would go into consumption.
I took ten bottles of Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and with
the third began to feel better. I became
regular and I got strong, and shortly after
that I was married. Now I have two nice
stout, heathy chilren, and am able to
work hard every day."
MRS. CLEMENTINA DUERRING,

"GIVE COMPOUND THE CREDIT.''
"I am writing to tell you the good your
medicine has always done me, and you
may use my letter in any way you wish,
and I hope it may be the means of helping
some other suffering woman. When I
was 16 years old I caught cold and for
two months was troubled with suppression.
I got so weak I could scarcely drag
myself up the stairs. I went to two doctors,
then my mother got a bottle of Lydia
E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound a _d I
took it. I never had any more t~.:ouble and
got strong fast. Then I took it again before
my little girl was born and I had not
a sick day. I give the Compound the credit for her good health.
This spring I felt very badly but I took the Compound and have
been well all summer. I cannot be grateful enough for your
medicine." MRS. HAROLD M. SMITH,
470 Water St., Clarksburg, W. Va.
"COMPOUND MADE ME REGULAR."
"I was very irregular and was tired and sleepy all the time,
would have cold chills, and my hands and feet would bloat. My
stomach bothered me, I had a pain in my side and a bad headache
most of the time. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
made me regular, my stomach is better and my pains have all
left me." MRS. MARY GAUTHIER,
21 Ridge St., Montpelier, Vt.
"SUCH A GOOD MEDICINE."
"I was very irregular and my left side bothered me so for sever·
al years that I expected to have to undergo an operation, but the
first bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound relieved
me of the pains in my side, and I continued its use until I became
regular. I am thankful for such a good medicine and will always
give it the highest praise."

PENNYROYAL.
In flower from June to September
and October. An infusion (tea) from
the dried leaves and flowering tops
of Pennyroyal is used to relieve wind
colic .. and sick stomach. The warm
infusion used freely will promote perspiration,
and is an excellent remedy
for common colds. Pennyroyal tea
is a stimulant.
I SUPPRESSI01";} :' h e non - appearance
of
the regular function at the customary
· age, or suppression after it is once
established, except as it occurs naturally
(in cases of pregnancy) may result from excitement,
shock, sudden fright, overstudy, and exhaustion of the
nervous system, exposure to cold, chronic digestive disturbances
which impair nutrition, and change of climate. ·whatever
the unnatural cause, there ' is great necessity for
prompt and active treatment. When the patient is poorly
nourished, or run-down from overwork, the general health
must be built up. A good nutritious diet, plenty of fresh
air and intervals of rest are of great importance. LyJia
E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound should be taken daily
to relieve the congestion. The bowels should be kept re_5ular .
with Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills. At the time the
function should appear the patient should have a hot
tub-bath or foot-bath and he put to bed, warmly covered
up, with hot water bottles over the lower abdomen.
SCANTINESS usually comes from poor blood, and is
common with the ill-nourished and anemic. To correct
this condition, eat plenty of nourishing food, which should
be as sitnple and easily digestible as practicable-brez.d
(preferably stale or dried), butter, milk, eggs, chicken and
beef. Do not eat pastry, pickles or highly spiced dishes.
Take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and Blood
Purifier in alternate doses. Daily movements of the bowels
should be secured by the use of Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver
Pills.

"I HAVE BEEN REGULAR EVER SINCE.''
''Twelve years ago I was very irregular.
This kept on for about three months and
I got worried about it. Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound was recommended
to me so I took it, and it regulated
me at once, and I have been regular ever
since, and am in good health. I give you
permission to use my testimonial and
hope some one will be benefited by it."

"VEGETABLE COMPOUND TABLETS."
"For years I suffered with what seemed
like a hemorrhage. l did not dare go
away from my home, and took medicine constantly without getting
much good from it. I could not go upstairs without sitting
down to rest when half way up, and there was a pounding in the
back of my head and roaring in my ears which my doctor said
was 'starved nerves' calling for aid. Friends advised me to try
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, saying they had been
benefited by it. The Compound Tablets gave me great relief, and
my health is much better than before, and I feel fine."
MRS. W. H. ALLEN, Box 83, Des Plaines, Ill.
"I QUICKLY GOT RELIEF."
"I had pains, was irregl!lar, had female
weakness, bearing- down feelirgs, was
tired out all the time. My bloo<i. was impure
and I always had a breaking out of
blotches and pimples on my face. I took
Lyd ia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound,
Blood Purifier and Liver Pills and used
the Sanative Wash and quickly got relief.
I kept on taking the remedies until I was
a different woman altogether. I cannot
thank you enough for your remedies as
they have. helped me so much."
MRS. JOSEPHINE HANDEL,
63 Hamburg Ave., New York City.
"I FELT BETTER AND GOT MORE."
"I had hemorrhages for four months at one time, and I got so
weak that I could l1ardly walk across the floor without holding on
to something. Someone advised me to take Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetab le Compound. I had taken so much medicine and my doctor
said he could do me no good, so my husband got me the
Compound. I soon felt better, and now I am well and strong."

THOROUGHWORT (BOUESET).
' Indian Sage
It is in flower from August to November.
An infusion (tea) ·maqe from
the tops and leaves of Thoroughwort
has a tonic effect; it is used to aid
digestion and to relieve an irritable
cough. It is a ' gentle purgative,
and is given to produce perspiration.
It can be taken either cold or warm.
\Vhen taken warm to produce perspiration
the patient should remain
covered in bed. TKOROUCHWORY
@CESS J When the natural function continues too
long, comes too frequently, or is too profuse
while it lasts, the general health begins to suffer. This
condition may be caused by poor blood, inflammation, a
lax and weak condition, and congestion of the female organs,
also tumors. This condition is very debilitatin~.
If the woman is full-blooded she should avoid blood-producing
foods, particularly beef and other red meats. \
run-down, thin, anemic woman should follow a diet preci8c:ly
the reverse of the foregoing; that is, of the mo~t
nourishing, blood-making food, such as e~·gs, milk, meat-:,
etc., her trouble being frequently clue to the fact that tl e
system is suffering from lack of nutrition. Rest is essenti; I,
and the patient should stay in bed for two or three daYs
every month if possible. Avoid walking or standing mo·e
than is absolutely necessary. In all cases take Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound Tablets. To keep bowe: s
regular take Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills.
I PAINFUL MENSTRUATION I The physically perfc'.t
woman should expenence
no pain whatever during the natural function, but
the woman today who is without pain or reflex disturbances
of some kind at this ti~e is exceptional.

"I HAVE TOLD LOTS OF GIRLS."
"I had pains in -both sides and once a
month I had to stay at home L·om work
and suffer a long time. One day a woman
came to our house and asked my mother
why I was suffering. Mother to!.d her
that I suffered every month, and she said
··~vhy don't you buy a bottle of Lydia E.
Pinkham's 'Vegetable Compound?' My
mother bought it, and the next month
I was so well that I worked all the month
v.·ithout loafing. I am in good health now
and have told lots of girls about it."
MISS CLARICE MORIN,
4 Garfield St., Taunton, Mass.
"I AM SURE IT WILL HELP."
"I have found that Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound helps me so much:
I had such a backache every month and
nearly cramped double. I advise every
woman and girl who is suffering from
female trouble to try the Compound for I
am sure it will help them. My mother
took it when she was a girl."
MISS RU'fH L. DUNNE.
402 E. Kansas St., Independence, Mo.
"A GOOD WORD FOR THE
COMPOUND."
"I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound for painful periods and female weakness. I would have
a s'ow, wearing pain in my back and thighs, was nervous and irritable,
with headache, constipation and poor digestion. T have
found relief by taking your medicine, and shall continue to speak
a good word for it whenever I have the opportunity."
MRS. H. C. MILLER, Somerset, Pa.
"I ALWAYS KEEP IT IN THE HOUSE."
"I take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound with great
success when in pain or when tired, and I keep it in the house
all the time. I wish I could tell every suffering woman of the good
it has done me. I have recommended It to several of my friends
and they also like it. I think it is doing a world of good."
MRS. ALF. HALLAND, R. F. D. No. 1, Westbrook, Minn.
"I TOOK IT REGULARLY."
"I shall be more than glad to tell what the Vegetable Compound
did for me. I suffered dreadfully every month and was very
irregular. I became alarmed and sent for Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound •. I took it regularly until I was without a
cramp or a pain, and felt like another person. It has now been
six months since I took any medicine at ail and I am perfectly
healthy." MRS. AUGUST KONDNER,

PLANTAIN.
In flower from May to October.
The plant loses its medicinal activity
by drying. An infusion (tea) made
from the freshly gathered roots and
tops of Plantain is used to promote
nutrition, increase the flow of urine,
and is antiseptic. The bruised leaves
are most useful when applied to
wounds, ulcers, bites of poisonous
insects, erysipelas, etc.
PAINFUL MENSTRUATION.Pain,
when the natural function is
being established, is usually due to
anemia and chlorosis. This form does
not usually persist beyond the twen..
tieth year. Other frequent causes are congestion and mflammation,
displacement and tumors. The most common
symptoms are a slow, wearing, dull pain in the pelvis and
extending through the back and thighs, nervousness, headache,
depression and disinclination to exertion, appetite
variable, digestion poor, constipation, profuse and scanty
flow. In some cases the symptoms are greatly relieved
by the establishment of the function_, in others they continue
throughout its duration. Take Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound to relieve congestion and inflammation,
and keep the bowels open with Lydia E. Pinkham's
Liver Pills. Rest from physical labors as much as possible
and be out in the open air and sunshine. At the first
appearance of the flow the patient --should retire to bed,
and apply on the abdomen pieces of flannel wrung from
as hot water as can be borne, and covered with dry flannel
to retain the heat. As fast as these cloths lose their heat
they should be renewed.
[ DISPLACEME,NT I The womb, which is loosely sus-pended
in the pelvic cavity, is
supported by the broad and round ligaments. It is easily
tipped out of its normal position, and may be displaced
either forward, backward or downward.

getting up too soon after child-birth, laceration, tumors,
abortions and yiolent coughing. With backward displacement
there are dragging pains, irregular and painful
periods, backache and irritation of the rectum. The bladder
is usually most affected by f\\rward displacement.
This is indicated by frequent and painful urination. All
displacemcu.ts have many common symptoms, such as discomfort
in walking, irregularities, irritation o£ the bladder,
bearing-down pains and backache, headache, neuralgia,
disordered digestion, whites and nervousness. To relieve
the congestion and tone up the ligaments of the womb,
take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. Take
Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills until there is a good free
movement of the bowels daily without strain. Avoid all
hard work, such as sweeping, lifting, running a sewing machine,
etc. At night, after removal of the corsets, rest on
the chest and knees (knee-chest) for five or ten minutes.

"I FEEL LIKE A NEW WOMAN."
"I was so weak and miserable that I
had almost given up. I had been sick for
six years with inward troubles and nervousness.
I had a pain in my right side
and could not eat anything without hurting
my stomach. I could not drink cold
water at all nor eat any kind of raw fruit
nor fresh meat nor chicken. From 178
pounds I went to 118, and would get so
weak at times that I fell over. I began to
take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound,
Blood Purifier and Liver Pi lis, ten
days later I could eat and it did not hurt
my stomach. I have taken the medicines ever since, and I feel
like a new woman. I now weigh 127 pounds, so you can see what
they have done for me already. My husband says he knows your
medicines have saved my life." MRS. J. S. BARLOW,
1624 South 4th St., Columbus, Ohio.
"GRATEFUL FOR THE PINKHAM REMEDIES."
"Some years ago I took Lydia E. Pinkham's · Vegetable Compound
and used the San;;~tive Wash for inflammation. I used about
five dollars' worth, and have never had to take anything of the
kind since. I am very grateful for what the Pinkham remedies
have done for me." MRS. M. L. ABBOTT,
110 Morse St., Coldwater, Mich.
"RELIEF FROM THE FIRST BOTTLE."
"The doctor said that .I had womb trouble and he doctored me
for a long time and I did not get any relief. I saw· Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound advertised and I tried it, and
found relief before I had finished the first bottle. I continued
taking it all through the Change of Life, and I am now a strong,
healthy woman and earn my own living."
MRS. JANE D. DUNCAN,
Forest Ave., West Quincy, Mass.
"FOUR BOTTLES CURED ME~
"After my baby was born I had inflammation so bad that I
suffered a great deal of pain and if I slipped off a stone in walking
out or got the least jar it would hurt me terribly. I even had
spasms of the womb, and the doctor said I must go to the hos-pital
and have an operation, I objected to that, yet people told me I was looking very badly. One day a lady calling upon me
advised me to take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
for she said she had had the same trouble dreadfully and had
doctors and got no good results, but she took the Compound and
was cured. She told the doctor, and he said he was glad she had
found something to relieve her -suffering, as he had done all he
could. I began taking it at once and after the first bottle I was
better, and four bottles cured me." MRS. ELLA F. RICE,

SPEARMINT.
It flowers in July and August. The
leaves and tops should be gathered for
medicinal use during dry weather and
previous to the full development of
the flowers. The warm infusion (tea)
made from the leaves and tops of
Spearmint is used to produce perspiration
after taking cold, and while
suffering from feverish symptoms
from various causes. vVhen used cold
it is beneficial in stimulating the secretion
of urine, and in highly colored
or scalding urine.
INFLAMMATION OF THE WOMB.-function, poot
nutrition, overwork, unsuitable clothing, displacements and
congestion. There is always an unnatural discharge with
inflammation. The pain of inflammation is a fixed pain;
never shifting from one place to another. During the
natural functions it gradually increases, and if the organs
are congested the suffering at that time is very severe.
There is usually a constant, dull, burning pain in the region
of the womb. The patient is melancholy, irritable and
nervous, has no appetite and suffers from indigestion.
Because of a run-down condition of the system, thin blood
and inflammation, ulcers form about the mouth of the
womb. To relieve the inflammation and . restore normal
conditions, take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
and· Blood Purifier in alternate doses. For the discharge
it is necessary to use Lydia E. Pinkham's Sanative Wash.
Keep bowels regular with Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills.
Eat good nourishing food, and rest in bed as much as
possible. One hour's rest after each meal is beneficial.
IINFLAMMATION OF THE ovARIES AND TUBES I

"GET A BOTTLE NOW."
"For years I suffered so sometimes that
I thought I could not stand it any longer.
It was all in my lower organs. At times I
could hardly walk, for if I stepped on a
little stone I would almost faint. One day
I did faint, and my husband was sent for,
and the doctor came. I wa:s taken to the
hospital and stayed four weeks, but when
I came home I would faint just the same,
and had the same pains. A friend who
is a nurse said for me to try Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I began
taking it that very day, for I was suffering
a great deal. It has already done me so much good. To anyo!•e
who is suffering as I was, my advice is to stop in the first drug
store and get a bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com·
pound before you go home." MRS. W. C. BROWN,
1625 Auburn Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.
"I AM THANKFUL FOR YOUR
MEDICINE."
"My kidneys were affected and my
ovaries. My right side hurt me so that I
could not get my foot off the floor. I was
so bad that the doctor said I must be operated
upon. When my husband came
home that night I sent him right out for
a bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound, and in a few days I could get
around all right. How thankful I am that
your medicine saved me from the knife.
I want other women to know the faith I
have in your remedies."
MRS. MOLLIE SMITH, R. F. D. No. 5, Shelbyville, Ky.
"IT CURED ME."
"If it had not been for Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
I would have had to be operated upon, and that is why I
recommend it to ailing women. My womb hurt me so that I could
hardly bear my clothes to touch me, and my ovaries were badly
inflamed so that I could hardly walk. After trying many doctors
and patent medicines I saw your medicine advertised and got it.
It cured me, and I wish every ailing woman would take it."
MRS. JOHN M. MURDOCK, Parnell, Mo.
"I CAN DO MY OWN WORK NOW."
"I was so weak and nervous that I could not do my work, and
I suffered with pains in my right side for a year. I took Lydia E.

RED CLOVER.
It flowers throughout the summer.
An infusion (tea) made from the blossoms
of this very common plant, Red
Clover, is soothing and has great
cleansing qualities, and is used for
spasmodic coughs, as tho!'e of measles,
bronchitis, laryngitis, etc. A solid extract,
to be used as an external application,
chiefly in the form of an ointment
for ulcers, burns, etc., is made
by uniting four ounces of the infusion
(tea) with half a pound of lard.
Spread on soft linen.
INFLAMMATION OF THE OVARIES AND TUBES.
-Sometimes only one ovary and tube is affected, or both
ovaries and tubes may be involved. Symptoms of inflammation
of the ovaries and tubes are fever, chills, nausea,
great nervousness and severe pains over the lower part of
the abdomen, extending backwards, which are increased
hy walking or riding. The natural function is very painful
and irregular and when standing there is inclination to
rest one foot upon the other, to relax the muscles and bend
the thigh. During each period the ovaries are more congested,
and at this time no hard work, such as sweeping,
lifting, straining, or running a sewing machine should be
done. Avoid getting the feet wet and taking cold. Suppression
of the natural functions and inflammation of the
womb will affect the ovaries. To subdue the inflammation,
relieve tlje congestion and stop the pain, take Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and Blood Purifier alternately.
The bowels must be kept open to avoid any pressure
over the ovaries. For this, use Lydia E. Pinkham's
Liver Pills. Complete rest in bed during. the menstrual
period should be taken.

"IN EXCELLENT HEALTH GlNCE."
"It was several years ago I started taking
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound.
I then suffered terrible pains
every month. My hu~band bought me a
bottle of it and it helped me right away.
Then after my second child came I had
female weakness very bad and I used the
Sanative Wash and Compound, and in a
short time was cured, and never had it
since. Then another time I took six bot-tles
before my baby came, and have been in eJ<cellent health since. I always praise
the Lydia E. Pinkham medicines wherever
I can, as I know they helped me and will help others. Lately
I have given the Vegetable Compound to my daughter, and wish
all suffering women would take it and be convinced of its worth."
MRS. JAMES A. BEIDEL, 113 N. Penn St., Shippensburg, Pa.
"AM FEELING ALL RIGHT."
"I had female weakness and a very bad backache, and took
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and used the Sanative
Wash, and am feeling all right again. Whenever I feel bad I
take your remedies, and I can recommend them to anyone."
MRS. EMMA CORMANY,
731 Brooklyn St., West Philadelphia, Pa.
"I AM CURED."
"I had female weakness which annoyed me continually, causing
irritation. I tried doctors and all kind;; of medicine for several
years, but was not cured until I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vege·
table Compound. I hope my testimonial will help others to try
your wonderful medicine." MRS. MARY R. MILLER,
Box 234, Commerce, Okla.
"LIKE A NEW GIRL."
"I am a girl of 22 years and I used to
faint away every month, and was very
weak. I was also bothered a lot with fe- male weakness. I read one of your little books and I saw that you have a Sanative
Wash for female weakness, and Liver
Pi lis for constipation. I used these reme·
dies with Lydia E. Pinkham's ~egetabl e
Compound, and I feel like a new girl and
am cured of these troubles. I hope all
young girls wlll get cured like I have.
I never felt better in my life."

SKULLCAP.
It flowers in July and August. The
flowers should be gathered, dried in
the shade and kept in closed tin vessels.
An infusion (tea) made from
the mature leaves and flowering tops
of Skullcap is used for a nerve tonic
and to give strength to the whole
system. For restlessness, wakefulness
and nervous excitability caused by
physical or mental overwork, beneficial
results are experienced by drinking
freely of this tea. It can be drunk
hot or cold.
LEUCORRHOEA (Whites-Female Weakness)
This is not of itself a disease, but only a sign or symptom
of disease or disorder, and of all symptoms of female diseases
it is one of the most common. Almost invariably it
means inflammation, occasionally it means nothing more
nor worse than a temporary congestion of the parts, as
IYhen, for example, it follows or immediately precedes the
natural functions. Some of the chief causes are displacements
and disease of the lining membrane, suppression,
uterine growths, constipation and anemia. This discharge
may prevent reproduction and be the sole cause of sterility.
There are constant bearing-down feelings, dragging pains
in the back, the circulation is poor, the feet are cold, and
there is local irritation with an almost uncontrollable desire
to relieve it by rubbing and scratching, which only affords
temporary relief. To allay the inflammation, use a cleansing,
healing, soothing douche. Take a fountain syringe
and first use one quart of warm water in which a heaping
teaspoonful of powdered borax has been disolved, to be
followed immediately by the Sanative Wash (see directions
on the bottle). Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
in connection with fresh air, suitable exercise, rest and good
nouri~hing fopd, will supply the proper constitutional treatment.
Constipation should he remeclied by taking Lydia E.
Pinkham's . Liver Pills.

"WE ARE A HAPPY FAMILY NOW."
"When I married and went to housekeeping
I was not feeling well and could
hardly drag myself along. I had such
tired feelings, my back hurt, my sides
ached, I had bladder trouble awfully bad,
and I could not eat or sleep. I had headacher:.
too and became almost a nervous
wreck. · My doctor thought I should .go to
a hospital but I did not like that idea very
well. I saw your advertisement in a paper
one day and I have taken Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound, Blood Purifier
and Liver Pills and used the Sanative
Wash, and now I have my health. When
we were married a year and a half, my baby came and we are a
happy family now, and your medicines are always in the hou ·,
If sick and ailing women would only know enough to take yu 1
medicine they would surely get relief."

I have got one of the finest baby girls you

HOPS.
Hops are gathered when fully
grown or ripened and are kept in bags.
The infusion (tea) made from the
co nes of tpis well-known plant is used •
to -promote sleep, allay restlessness
and relieve pain. A pillow under the
head will often relieve pain and enable
the p'cftient to sleep.
fCHILDLESSNESS \The inability to
have children is
the cause of unhappiness in many homes. The entire
female organism is especially intended to furnish the
capacity for motherhood; consequently, if you are neither
too ' old nor too young, and in good physical condition,
you should be able to have children. The cause of sterility
in a large majority of cases is some disease or disorder in
the functions of the generative organs. When the following
conditions accompany sterility they may be removed
and the maternal instinct gratified: inflammation, congestion,
displacements and uterine growths. The success
~ttending the use of Lydia E. Pinkham's Veg,etable Compound
for these troubles is ample proof of its efficacy. It
does its work, not by any mysterious power, but simply
by restoring the female organism to a proper healthy condition.
First, let the woman get into a healthy and normal
condition, and then, when she is fit to have children there
is 1 ittle fear of barrenness. There are, occasionally, cases
of malformation which make motherhood impossible, but
these are unusual, and incurable barrenness is an extremely
rare condition. A childless wife, whether she is conscious
of . having female troubles or not. should take Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound.

"MY DOCTOR ADVISED THE
COMPOUND."
"I was always tired, with intolerable
pains in my head. My heart beat very
fast, and at times I had pains in my left
side. My strength was going as I did not
eat much, and did not sleep well at night.
My doctor advised 'nle to take Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and
Liver· Pills, which strengthened me and
my appetite came back, and in due time
our twins came. We nave five boys and
six girls. You can publish my testimonial
for other mothers of families."

is so strong and well. I never had so easy
a time as I had with her, and I owe it all to
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
which I took all the time until the baby

your Compound in June and from then until September 25th,
when my last baby came, I got along much better than I had before.

I PREGNANCY I The pregnant
woman, unless her
female organs are in a healthy, natural condition, will find
the months which precede maternity very trying. There
is also danger of a miscarriage, which is likely to cause
permanent ill health in addition to the disappointment. A
woman should take every means to strengthen herself during
pregnancy, so that she may avoid miscarrying, and be
able to pass through the ordeal with the least possible pain
and discomfort. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
should be taken to help overcome the unnatural conditions
and discomforts at this time. Pregnant woinen are liable
to suffer from constipation, and Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver
· Pills should be taken to overcome this. Be careful not to
overwork. The added strain upon the body makes it unwise
to subject it to unusual efforts which might not at
other times prove harmful. Avoid heavy lifting, high
reaching, and all hard work. Eat good, wholesome, nutritious
food. Eat sparingly of meat. Have the urine examined
by a physician frequently during the last months of
pregnancy, or before this if there is any unnatural swelling
of the feet and limbs, puffiness under the eyes, and a diminished
quantity of urine. Many women are constitutionally
weak and should be on their feet as little as possible.
frequently resting themselns by lying down.

"VEGETABLE COMPOUND DID
WONDERS."
"A few years ago your remedies did
wonders for me and I have praised them
highly ever since. I was living at Grand
Rapids, Michigan, at the time. When I
was down in bed, three of the best physicians
adv, ised me to be taken to a hospital.
They said I would have to have an
operation, that there was something growing
in my left side that would have to be
cut out. I refused to go and instead sent
to a drug store for Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound and took it according
to directions. In a short time I r ecovered enough to do my
work, and later was able to make the trip to Decatur, Illinois. r
know the Compound worked a miracle in my case and I have recommended
it to many persons, telling them what it has done for
me." MRS. LAURA A. GRISWOLD,

"VEGETABLE COMPOUND WORKED
A MIRACLE."
"When I was single I suffered a great
deal from female weakness because my
work compelled me to stand all day. I
took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
for that and was helped. After I
was married I took the Compound again
and my oldest boy is a 'Pinkham' baby.
When he was a year old, from my symptoms
I thought another babe was coming.
I took the Compound, and after three
months I passed what the doctor called n
'growth.' He said it was a miracle that it
came away, as one genei·ally goes under
the lmife to have them removed. I never want to be without your
Compound in the house."
MRS. FRANK KNOBL, 1642 Fulton St., Harrisburg, Penn.
"EVERY WOMAN SHOULD TAKE IT."
"Your medicine has done me a world of good and I recommend
'-'4 to others. When I began to take it I was passing through the
Change of Life. I had hemorrhages, was very nervous, could not
sleep nights, was very much troubled with my bowels, and had
pains and soreness in the lower part of abdomen. Two doctors
said I had a growth. One doctor said I would have to be operated
upon, and the other one said I could not live through an operation.
I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, Blood Purifier
and Liver· Pills and I have come out all right. I think every woman
should keen the Compound in the house and take it. They
must not think it will help them in a dav. It takes time but it i~
a good remedy." MRS. A. BANNIGAN,

I UTERINE TU1ii"ORS] Uterine
tumors are
morbid gro" ths w1thin the womb.
They are of v<~rious kinds, hut the
most common are fibroids. These growths never appear
before puberty, and are comparatively rare before the c:;th
year. They <J.re most common between the 33rcl and . ,;th
years. After the Change of Life they seldom grow, although
exceptions· to this are occasionally found. \Vith a fihro1d
growth there is usually excessive menstruation at first, ,\lld
later bleeding between periods with its resulting anemi;~;
frequency of urination with pain and scalding, retention of
the urine, constipation, leucorrhoea, and swelling of the
abdomen, which sometimes gives the appearance of pregnancy
that is liable to deceive even the woman herself;
a dull pain in one or both groins or across abdomen is
sometimes present, with bearing-clovm pains and backache.
Uterine growths usually increase in size just before menstruation,
when pelvic congestion is greatest. Not by any
means does every fibroid require operative · treatment.
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound Tablets have
been used with great success in scattering congestion and
improving circulation. through the womb, thus reducing
inflammation, controlling hemorrhages, and stopping the
growth of the tumors, which then gradually diminish in
size and finally disappear. All stimulants should be avoided,
all spices and all hot or alcoholic beverages. The bo,vels
should be kept regular by Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills.

"I am now through the Change of Life. It was during that
time that I suffered so and your Compound helped me. I tried
several doctors but none seemed to give me any relief. Every
month I suffered intensely with pains on both sides, which made
me so weak that I had to go to bed for at least three days. At
last a friend recommended Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound

no pains at all and could do my housework and shopping the same
as always." MRS. J. H. THOMSON,

I CHANGE OF LIFE! A s t h i s
. critical time
approaches. the care of the general
health is of great importance. Hard
work. worry, great excitement and
fatigue should be avoided. Rest as much as possible. The
usual age at which the "Change•of Life" occurs is ab0ut forty-
five years. Usually the natural function becomes irregular,
gradually diminishing in quantity, and finally, within a
year or t\YO, ceases altogether. There is, at this time, more
or less derangement of the general system, such as had
feelings in the head, sparks before the eyes, dizziness, palpitation
of the heart, flashes or waves of heat, sounds in the
ears, a sense of fulness or suffoc;:~tion. and constipation. The·
nervous system is much affected. Sometimes the mind
suffers more than the body and there is temporary insanity.
If this pef·iod is safely passed through, the prospect will be
good for a long period of sound health. Take Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound to correct the irregularities,
to tone up the system and. strengthen the nerves. If
the natural function is prolonged the TABLET form is
best. Take Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills to pre\'Cnt or
o,·ercome constipation. Fresh air, exercise, attention to the
bowels and kidneys. and fa ,-orable surroundings are of
utmost importance. The diet should be nourishir.1g and not
stimulating. Sleep eight or nine hours each night in, a
well-1·entilated room.

"I BECAME STRO~Hi. "
"I was weak and nervous and all rundown.
I could not sleep nor eat, and had
such a trembling through me all the time.
I got so thin and poor, and was so weak I
could not do any work at all for nearly
two years. While taking Lydia· E. Pinkham's
Vegetable 'Compound I became
quite strong, and am able now to do
quite a lot of work. I have told a number
of people that it is very, very good and
has helped me a great deal."

Compound is the best medicine on the
market for women. I was all run dow :J in
health, nervous and without appe ite.
The Compound has toned up my sy: <.em
and done me a wonderful sight of 1 od.
I cannot say enough in praise of it."
MRS. H. C. LANTZ,

"I RECOMMEND THE VEGETAE '.E

"I was run down, nervous, tired, 1 'ne,
could not sleep, and had poor digeF ' 'on.
I would have been a nervous wrecJ.· hut
friends advised Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound It
helped me and I recommend it now."
MRS. A. KAMENSKI, Box 438, Guilford, Co1 :1.
"MY NERVES ARE BETTER~
"When I began taking your Compound I was in a serious condition
caused by overtaxing my strength. For years I car··ied
heavy buckets of water to the horses and cows, and feed to the
hogs. I would help set, replant, hoe and cut tobacco, and help to
hang it in the shed by handing it up to the one above me. All this
I have done besides my housework for a family of five, baking,
washing and ironing, and I tended my garden and raised chickens.
I became irregular and extremely nervous. A peculiar cold
feeling would come over my body in spots causing the pores to
rise like goose-flesh and the hair on my head to rise, followed
by a stinging, burning sensation. A neighbor recommended Lydia
E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound to me and it has restored me
to health . I have become regular and am cured of that cold
feeling and my nerves are better. I cannot praise the Com,ound
too highly and hope some suffering woman will give it a trial."
MRS. R. KINNISON, Rossburg, Ohio.

ONIONS.
The common onion is a very useful
garden product. The juice mixed with
sugar is an excellent remedy for
coughs, colds and croup. Onion poultices
are usee! for bronchitis-and pneumonia
in young children, and are also
useful in some cases applied as drafts
to the feet. Roasted onions applied as
a poultice to boils will help to bring
them to a head (suppuration).
DISORDERED NERVES I Many
things
wear upon the nerves, but few things
ONION
impose a harder strain upon them than the various disorders
of the female system. When the natural function is painful
and there is inflammation and congestion of the organs, the
nervous strain is especially great. Impoverished blood
which fails to feed the nerves properly is also a cause 0f
nervous troubles. One of the most troublesome effects
of weak and disordered nerves is sleeplessness. Almost
anything which unduly excites, tires or injures the nerves
may interfere with sleep. Just before retiring, a hot footbath
is often effective; the water may be as hot as can be
borne ( 106- r 12) Fahr.), and may be continued for ten
minutes. If the nerves are worn out from the strain caused
by female disorders, take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound to relieve those disorders. 'fake the Blood
Purifier to restore the blood to a condition so that it will
properly feed the nerves. These remedies should be taken
in alternate doses. A complete rest and change from all
cares is especially helpful. Special attention should be
paid to diet, as a large number of nervous peopte complain
of disturbances of digestion. Eat nourishing food-broiled
or boiled fish, especially mackerel and salmon, lamb, chicken,
steak, eggs, nearly all fresh ngetables, ripe fruits. Drink
milk, cocoa, chocolate and ;nter. Constipation nearly always
accompanies nervous troubles. Lydia E. Pinkham's
Liver Pills should be taken to overcome this,

"I FEEL ENTIRELY WELL."
"It give-s me great pleasure to let you
know that I improved in health with the
first bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound, and after two bottles I
felt entirely well. Before using your
remedies I cou!d not do anything without
feeling a pain in my back. Wd'rds cannot
express my gratitude for the good
your medicine has done me, and through
me to my family. I recommend your medicine
to all women suffering from female
trouble:'\. particularly to Danish women."

"A WOR .... .J 01- 'iOOD.''
'My ::tead would pain me so at times
that I could not see, my back pained me,
and sometimes it seemed as though a
knife was thrust through my body. I
took two bottles of Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound, and today I feel
fine. Everyone who sees how well and
strong I am, is surprised. Your medicine
has done me a world of good, and I will
tell about it to anyone who is ailing."
MRS. MARIE GRAHAM,
534 E. Caldwell St., Louisville, Ky.
"IT SAVED ME."
"I suffered terribly with a displacement and bladder trouble.
I was in misery all the time and could not walk any distance.
I thought I never could be cured, but ftiy mother advised me to
try Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and I did. I am
relieved of the womb and bladder trouble, and I think the Compound
is the finest medicine on earth for suffering women. It
saved me, and now every time I complain a little my husband
wants me to get the Compound.''
MRS. VIOLA JASPER, Fuqua, Texas.
"NEVER BEEN TROUBLED SINCE~
"About five years ago I had organic inflammation. I suffered
intensely with such a burning and irritating feeling through my
whole system, caused from inflammation, that I was unable to
walk a block without trouble. Also at night I was troubled very
much. I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound for three
months, and I can say today that I have never been troubled
since. I gladly rPcommend your medicine to all sufferers."
MRS. H. HINRICHS, R. F. D. No. 2, Covington, Ind.

WORMWOOD.
The plant should be gathered during
its flowering period, July and August.
An infusion (tea) made from the tops
and leaves of Wormwood is used to
destroy and. expel intestinal worms,
also as a general tonic, and to improve
the appetite. Wormw.ood steeped in
vinegar has been used successfully as
a local application for injuries.
I BACKACHE I Of _the many things
which may cause
backache, one of the most common in women is some disorder
of the internal organs of sex. Congestion, inflammation,
displacements and other disturbances of these organs
are sure to be felt elsewhere, and are especially likely to
affect. the nerves of the back, causing a persistent pain or
ache.
!KIDNEY AND BLADDER DISORDERS I The kidneys
remove from
the blood certain waste and poisonous products. They are
always at work, night and day, year in and year out, from
the beginning to the end of life. Not health alone but life
itself depends upon their constant activity. Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound should be taken to prevent
the ailments of women from causing affections of the kidneys.
In pregnancy, if there is a slight temporary disturbance
of the kidneys, take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound Tablets. Avoid eating too much meat, be
sparing or abstinent in the use of alcoholic drinks, have
plenty of fresh air, wear warm clothing, see that the circulation
of the blood is good and the skin active, and dnnk
water freely. Keep the bowels regular with Lydia E.
Pinkham's Liver Pills. No indication of a tendency toward
kidney disease should be neglected. Fatal disorders
of this kind usually come on so gradually as to be neglected
until they have become incurable.

"i AM FEELING FINE.''
"I was looking over the paper one day
and read of a woman who felt as I did and
took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
so I took it too. I had lost three
children and was all run down and so
weak I could not sleep at night. I would
have blind spells, and everything I ate
upset my stomach. 1 was very nervous,
and if I would start to sweep I would have
to stop and lie down before I could finish.
Now I am proud to tell you I am feeling
fine and have a boy baby. He is my
'Pinkham' baby. I keep a bottle of Compound
in my house always."
MRS. PETER MARCO, Box 54, North Oxford, Mass.
"FOUND IT VERY HELPFUL."
"At the time I was expecting my last child I took Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and again when I was going
through the Change of Life I took it for nervousness and dyspepsia.
I found it very helpful in all these cases, and I have
spoken of it to others and have had them try it, and they have
received good results from it."
MRS. GEORGE A. DUNBAR, 17 Roundy St., Beverly, Mass.
"HAVE GAINED IN EVERY WAY.''
"Before I began taking Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound I was troubled
with bearing-down pains in my back
and sides, and after my meals my stomach
would bloat up till I could scarcely
get my brtath. At times I was so weak
I could hardly stand on my feet, and I
looked hollow-eyed and my skin was
yellow. Now I have a good color, have
gained in every way, and can do my work
without any pains. I think the Compound
is the best medicine on earth for a WO·
man's weakness."
MRS. NELLIE WILLIAMS, Box 164, Knightsville, Ind.
"AM DOING MY WORK ALL ALONE."
"For about a year I had sharp pairis across the lower part of
my body and was hardly able to move arou~d the house. My
head would ache and I was dizzy and constipated and had no
appetite. After taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound,
Liver Pills, and using the Sanative Wash, I am feeling stronger
than for years. I have a little boy eight months old, and am
doing my work all alone. I would not be without your medicine
in the house as there is none like it." MRS. F . E. YOST,
1018 Fountain St., Alber t Lea, Minn.

WILD CHERRY.
The bark should be gathered in the
fall of the year. An infusion (tea)
made from the inner bark of \Vild
Cherry is used as a tonic, a ·sedative
to the nerves, and to improve the circulation,
also for irritating coughs
and loss of appetite. This tea should
be made by using one ounce of bark
to one pint of cold water.
I 1;-rDIGEST~ Indigestion is
-- - almost invariably
associated with diseases and ailments of the female org· tJ,.
The usual symptoms are headache, feeling· of weight ,! ',t:r
eating, heartburn, constipation, coated tongue, belchin;~· of
g·as, severe pain in pit of stomach, failing appetite and a
tired feeling. Vomiting and diarrhoea are often only rhe
efforts of Nature to get rid of undigested food.
jcoNSTiPATIO:Nl In almost all cases of indigeslwn
or female ailments, constipation
OCCUtS; and great care should be exercised tO aYoid this
condition. Habitual c9nstipation causes piles, melancholia,
listlessness, backache, bloating, belching 'of gas, loss of
appetite, sick headache with nausea and vomiting, and
muddy complexion, often accompanied with facial eruptions.
Establish a regular daily habit of going to stool
at a fixed time; sip a glass of cold water half an hour before
breakfast. A diet largely vegetarian, with coarse bread,
fruit (fresh or stewed), will help regulate this function.
The care of the skin must not be neglected; the daily bath
or sponge, followed by rubbing with a coarse towel is of
great importance. When a laxative preparation is needed,
take Lydia E. Pinkham's Liver Pills.

"THANKFUL THAT I FEEL WELL."
"I went to the doctor and he told me I
must have an operation on my left ovary
and I hated to have it done. I was also
having trouble with my bladder, and
every month I would have pains and my
hands and feet were cold all the time. I
took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com·
pound and my bladder trouble is cured
and I feel better in every way. I give you
permission to publish my name because
I am so thankful that I feel well again."
MRS. FRED BEHNKE, Marinette, Wis.
"STRENGTH AND HEALTH
RESTORER."
"Four years ago I was very sick and
my life was nearly spent. The doctors
stated I would never get well without an
operation and that without it I would not
live one year. My husband objected to
any operation and got me some of Lydia
E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I
took it and commenced to get better, and
am now stout and well able to do my own
housework. I can recommend the Vege·
table Compound to any woman who is
sick and run down as a wonderful strength
and health restorer. My husband says
I would have been in my grave ere this if it had not been for your
Vegetable Compound." MRS. BLANCHE JEFFERSON,
1120 W. 7th St., Des Moines, Iowa.
"I RECOMMEND YOUR REMEDIES."
"About two years ago I had a bad case
of inflammation of the female organs. I
was sick in bed for four weeks under the
doctor's care but he said I needed an
operation and could not get well without
it. I got Lydia E. Pinkham's remediesVegetable
Compound, Blood Purifier,
Liver Pills, Sanative Wash and tampons,
and improved right along. I have recom·
mended your remedies to my friends."
MRS. FRANK HAVENS,
70 So. Kistler St., East Stroudsburg, Pa.
"IT SAVED ME FROM AN OPERATION.''
"Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com·
pound relieved me of pains in my side that I had for years and
which doctors' medicines failed to relieve. It has certainly saved
me from an operation." MRS. J. W. SHERER,
126 Cass St., Dayton, Ohio.
