Description
January 23, 1950. 11 a.m. Photograph taken on behalf of the March of Dimes. Shows a child likely at the Central Carolina Convalescent Hospital, also known as the polio hospital, in Greensboro, which served the central North Carolina region. This time period was one of strict racial segregation, except at the polio hospital, which treated black and white children together. This photo shows writer Betty Smith, author of the best seller, "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" feeding a child. In the photo an iron lung is in the background. The assignment card says Miss Smith is writing an article, apparently about polio. Face obscured during digitization to protect patient privacy.
