C, February, 1964 No. 7 The Twelve Faces of Richardson-Merrell The name Richardson-Merrell Inc. appearing o n more than 3,000 products in the drug field is the corporate name of our organization originally known as Vick's Family Remedies Company, and more recently as Vick Chemical Company. From humble beginnings here in Greensboro in 19 0 5, the organization has grown into a large diversified enterprise comprised of twelve divisions operating throughout the free world and employing more than 6,600 employees. During the last fis- ethical drugs are those prescribed by doctors; proprietary drugs," those that are advertised directly to the general public; veterinary drugs, those that are used in maintaining animal health; and chemicals (including plastics), that segment of our business which produces industrial chemicals and plastic packaging materials. In 1960 it was felt the name Vick Chemical Company described only the proprietary segment of the enterprise and no longer gave a true picture of the diversity of operations and pro- factures and markets similar proprietary drug products, and others, in 161 foreign countries outside the United States and Canada. '■''•. Research and development work for Vick divisions is done in Mount Vernon, New York. Vick Chemical Company, as it was known earlier, began broadening its line of products outside the cold remedy field in 1938 when it purchased the William S. Merrell Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Division Laboratories Division Vick International Division Walker Laboratories Division Vick Manufacturing Division J. T. Baker Chemical Co. IN FOUR MAJOR DRUG FIELDS cal year both sales and earnings were the highest in the history of our company, with earnings of $17.5 million based on sales of $169.9 million. Beginning in this issue of GREENSBORO VICK and continuing in future editions, a series of articles explaining the operations of the enterprise and of each division will acquaint all employees with the "Twelve Faces of Richardson-Merrell." Richardson - Merrell is responsible for the manufacture and sale of a host of products in the fields of ethical and proprietary drugs, veterinary medicines, chemicals and plastics. The scope and diversity of our business is indicated by the Richardson-Merrell symbol on this page. To explain the four segments of the R-M sphere, ducts which comprised the Company's business. Therefore, in October, 1960 the name was changed to Richardson- Merrell Inc., a combination of the names of the founders of the Vick Chemical Company, Lunsford Richardson, and of the Company's first subsidiary, William S. Merrell. Proprietary drugs bearing the Vick trademark, as well as Lavoris and Clearasil, are manufactured by the Vick Manufacturing Division with plants and offices in Greensboro, North Carolina; Philadelphia and Hat- boro, Pennsylvania; and Weston, Ontario. These products are marketed in the United States and Canada by Vick Chemical Company Division with headquarters in New York. Vick International Division manu- this division manufactures and markets ethical pharmaceuticals. Another company, acquired i n 1941, is the /. T. Baker Chemical Company in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. It is a leading producer of pharmaceutical and fine industrial chemicals as well as laboratory reagents. After World War II further diversification occured when Jensen-Salsbery Laboratories, Kansas City, Missouri, became associated with the Company. "Jen-Sal," as it is called, develops and markets items for the care and prevention of animal diseases. Still further variety was added in 1953 when the Company acquired Tulox Plastics Division (formerly Extruded Plastics, Inc.) of Norwalk, (Continued on Page 2)
