JOHN" QUINCY ADAMS ox THE REPUBLICAN PARTY—A SPIR-ITED SKETCH. Extract from a speech delivered by Jolm Quincy Adams nt Franklin Ball, Boston, October li7. 1870. Look again at Missouri. This is tin honest division oi opinion among hon-ored and eminent leaders of the Repub-lican party on a question "f principle. Mr. Oratz Brown and Senator Sohurz maintain that it is a parody on equal rights to give votes to every black man in the State, and to refuse to diva votes nt the same time to lilty thou-sand white men. And so I think, and no you think, aud so thinks the honest halt' of the Republican party. And yet President Grant meets this debate how T By argument f He cannot speak. And now, li'llowcitziens. you may fairly ask what we have to propose .1 you give the power to the Democratic par-ty. I will tell you and il is easy to tell, for I have no new thing to discov-er. The principles of Democracy tire as old as the government itself, and I A WONDBBFCL MACHINE. | The following description of a iron-derl'nl Machine, the invention of a mechanic named Bergnrann, hi Trey, ' X. Y.. is given by the Troy Time*. The idea first ocenred to the old fel-low in a dream, fourteen years ago and after laboring zealously all that time against reverses and dfflreoltiea, he finally succeeded in perfecting the following ingenius wonder: We will now attempt to describe the machine. It is so complicated, and does such wondcrfal tilings, that a perfect description would fill columns. We hardly know what to call it, even. Tt beats all th;, automatons in the world. The render mast inMgtiMf'a beautiful miniature stvncture set upon a huge mass of rocks, with roadbeds winding up the sides of the rocks, and streams of running water coursing down precipitous bluffs. This minia ture house represents the residence of a wealthy old miller, with bis grist-mill, saw null, oil-mill, etc., adjoining. There am some thirty figures to be seen in the foreground and about the buildings and mills. There-is also a little fountain iu the foreground, with the water playing, and a lake with a b"al and oarsman. .Ml these mills sun) figures and playing waters are set iu motion by means of a combination of machinery similar to the works of a clock, and when these are wound up and sel running every figuro takes up its automatic, movement. The old miller sits in an elegant, apartment reading a newspaper. His eyes follow the column downward. His head in-clines with a conespohding motion.— The column is finished and the sheet is turned over and the eyes are attract-ed to another portion of the paper.— Every movement is wonderfully life like. The miller's wife sits in another apartmenf industriously spiiitiing.— The domestics are going about |>er-lormiiu' their dailv roil. The saw-mill is a /«»• mntile oi each an institution.— The log is in its place and slides along ' to meet the teeth of the saw, which is | working up and down cutting it in two.
